The New Quest System reminds me of this talk

At DICE 2010, professor Jesse Schell presented the idea of "Beyone Facebook" and our achievement and gratification based society. Its a very intersesting watch and shows how very simple ideas can lead to huge money making operations.

He brings up the concept that achievements, points or reward systems aren't necessarily evil but can be used for 'good' as well. They encourage prolonged play and community building. Achievements and points reward this behavior by giving gratification to this behavior. So what's this have to do with Giantbomb?

This week Giantbomb introduced their Quest system and lo and behold we have thousands of users scanning pages to get experience to level up their account. It's an interesting tactic by Giantbomb (and at least its different from other gaming websites) to encourage navigation of the pages and editing of pages, forum posts, etc. Sure there will be those that abuse the system but ultimately if it benefits the site I'm all for it.

Then again this argument can also be made.

At first I didn't think it would work, then I clicked on the rat link. It's making me look at some of the great pages this community has come up with as well as making me become a more active member. Great addition to the website because of the people and ideas it promotes, don't think another gaming website could do something like this.
