Blog #6 - Wiki, Beyond Good & Evil and T-Shirt Competitions

So, what's been going on?

I realised I spend way too much time on Giant Bomb and way too much time submitting Wiki entries for Phoenix Wright characters. Seriously. My entire Wiki list is 1,138 points on the Wendy Oldbag page. 452 points on the now deleted Yatagarasu page. 361 points on the Calisto Yew page. Then there are all the characters I have added, including Damon Gant, Marvin Grossberg, Jake Marshall, Lawrence Curls, Cody Hackins and Wendy Oldbag as well as several locations. Do I have nothing better to do with my time? The worst part is there are like 50 more characters I want to add and write articles for but I just don't have the time.

On a similar subject, I have started work on my Damon Gant illustration, so stay tuned!

Moving on, I finished Beyond Good & Evil yesterday. I think it is fair to say that this game is considered a cult classic. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot. The photography side mission really kept me playing, as it appealed to me in the way that Pokemon does (and was better than Pokemon Snap). The setting, characters and art style were all great and unique. The controls on PC were awful, the combat fairly weak and mashy and the game has some serious issues with character development (Spoiler: Oh look, suddenly I'm the chosen one... oh and I'm also the source of an alien power transformed in to human form. Thanks for dropping that in there, game).

On a final note, I saw this competition on Facebook to design a T-Shirt. I'm supposed to be a designer, so I took a look and most of the designs are so awful... like MS Paint and WordArt. So I threw something together in the hopes that I could at least get runner up. My friend is currently the winner and I don't want to or expect to do better than him but I have to beat some crappy vomit inducing designs. I would appreciate any votes, and also if you like check out the winning entry by Jack Wells and vote for him as well. Honestly, I don't think my design is very good but it can't hurt to enter and I didn't want to spend a lot of time on this.

@crusader8463: I've got to assume it's UK residents only. I haven't read the full terms and conditions though. Follow the link and I'm sure it will say somewhere.

@crusader8463:  The only reason I assume it's UK only is that 02 are owned by British Telecom (BT), a main phone provider in the UK. Enter if you want, you'll only lose time if they say no so that's fine.

I wouldn't have gone with that font, but like the stripes.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you're interested in Typography I'd suggest reading Stop Stealing Sheep, it gives you a good idea of type theory and helps when choosing a font.

$1.50 = the game and a pack of cheese, and I STILL never got it!
$1.50 = the game and a pack of cheese, and I STILL never got it!
Sorry for derailing your blog post with that contest stuff, I will try and get it back on track for you and clean up some of those posts.

Beyond Good and Evil has always been one of those games I always heard people talk about but never played it. I did play the first 20-30 minutes of it on some console, but I didn't get a chance to play it long enough to get a feeling for it. Every time it was on some Steam sale I always found an excuse to pass up on it. HELL! Here in Canada they were even giving the dam game away in packs of $1.50 cheese strings and I STILL never played it!

Even the runners up in that contest get a frigging Blackberry, so I hope I at least get runner up so I can sell that thing and put the money towards buying a new video card to replace the ones I have now since they are on there last legs and ready to go boom at any moment.

Anyway, I voted for ya in the contest so best of luck. The competition isn't very fierce, quality wise, but it will be tough to get enough people on the thing voting to make much of a difference this close to the contests end date. Especially if you are not on the first 2-3 pages.

@crusader8463:  It isn't derailing it, the competition was part of what I wanted to talk about anyways. I'm not hopeful but it was worth a shot for both of us, nothing to lose.

They made a PC version of the game which probbably isn't hard to run so you could find that somewhere, or watch Youtube videos. I would advise checking it out because it has a really weird story and combination of gameplay mechanics. I can't believe they would give it away with cheese strings. I've only just played it though so you aren't the only one to miss out on it when people were talking about it. A friend bought it for me 2 months ago and said I had to play it so I did.

@AlisterCat:  Ya, turns out it's only open to people in the UK so even if I win I won't "win". =(

Like I said there was just always some reason I never got around to playing it, or some new game to play instead until it just left my mind altogether. Some day I will play it. Probably the same day I finally install that copy of Psychonauts (PC) that I found in some discount bargain bin store for $2.

@crusader8463: INSTALL PSYCHONAUGHTS RIGHT NOW. It's one of the best games I have played. It's so unique and fun spirited. I bought it for £1 in a Steam sale without knowing anything about it and it's incredible. Great characters, voice acting, story, setting and gameplay.

@AlisterCat:  Oh ya, I played it for about an hour and loved it, but again I just got distracted by other shiny things and then etc. etc etc. I found it kind of frustrating to control with PC controls though, so I had been mainly putting it off until I could get a controller to play it with in my PC, but I have never found one cheap enough to warrant getting it for just that one game.

@crusader8463:  Don't you have an Xbox360 controller? I did use that for a bit but I eventually got used  to the PC controls but a friend of mine used his Xbox controller.

@AlisterCat: Just a wireless one. I looked at buying one that worked with PC's but they wanted like $60-$70 for them. I'm in the process of trying to trade my 360 for a PS3 on kijiji.ca, and I'm hoping to get that done some time soon. If I can then I will just use the PS3 controller as they all work on PC's.

@crusader8463:  Hmmm, yeah. You need to buy a receiver for a wireless but any old wired Xbox360 controller will do. You dont need special one like they have for sale. PS3 is supported by 3rd party programs but I prefer to go for Xbox360 because some PC games do have native support for that but I doubt we'll seen native support for PS3 controllers.

@AlisterCat: Ya, I have tried to buy one of those connectors but every store I went into they all just looked at me like I was crazy and that they never heard of the device. So I tried online and same thing. Once Microsoft realized that they could make more money by forcing people like myself to buy a new controller for $60-$70 instead of paying $5 for a stupid plug in they did just that.

If I win the lotto I would buy one, but I'm not about to go out and pay what they are asking for a controller just to play one or two games with. lol

I never fully got what was revealed at the ending to Beyond Good and Evil, mostly cause the final boss kept talking during the actual fight, and I never bothered to look it up on youtube. I actually fired the game up just a few days ago along with a couple of my other PS2 games (Kya:Dark Linage & Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy) to see how they'd held up.

Didn't play very far, mostly started the game up and did side missions until there were no more, but got a bunch of pearls. The combat, from the part in the beginning that I played, was simply no fun at all. The rest of the game though has got a really unique draw to it, and yeah the photography part was fun also.

I'm thinking I might go on to replay the whole thing one of these days, just to keep me up to date whenever that rumored sequel does come out.

@RockmanBionics:  Basically you were the source of the DOMZ overlord's power. Your 'parents' turned you in to a human and took you away to stop it and it's been chasing you ever since attacking everyone you come in to contact with. It's very poorly explained and rushed. They never fully explain what you are or why you are the way you are now, or how you can bring people back to life but it's one of many flaws in an interesting game.
