Unfortunately Sony rarely see a need to inform us what we are getting for our agreement. If the download was not so large I'd not be surprised if they simply did it to force people to accept a new EULA.
Stability again, presumably. Firmware can effect all aspects of games, perhaps 2.42 broke some obscure title, or perhaps they made some OS optimisations to free more resources for in game XMB.

Comments like this piss me off... If the damn update didn't do anything, then Sony wouldn't freaking put the time in to make it... It obviously does some sort of optimization that was needed...

Hope so, I still think it will come this August instead, but with them being confident enough to even talk about it at E3 and say the date is later in July, well that makes me think they are staying hush for a secret release like they always do.
