Working life

This week I worked six days in a row of eight hour shifts. Two jobs. Bewildered. Forgive me, I'm young--but now I understand why people are cranky all the time and never get anything done. They're too busy being exhausted.

Let's all try to live like children. Let's all get our lives back.

@hedfone:  Oh that's what this website's about.

@HS21:
    Blockbuster Canada, and a lovely Bakery. The bakery job is new and terribly stressful. The Blockbuster job is slack, but soul-sucking. "Why didn't you sell?" Because he didn't need it. He could buy a book a book or maybe some vegetables with that money. Or a loaf of bread from the bakery. The bakery where I spent all day trying not to throw bread everywhere. I'm not really complaining, I'm just tired right now. And I see it as a problem. I can deal with it. But should I have to?

I think the question here is do you need two jobs?
Totally know where you come from tho, I used to have a  8 to 6 job for 2 years and I was fucking broken when I got home.
Factor in a boyfriend, videogaming, a WoW addiction and a need for solitude.

@TaliciaDragonsong: The solitude is the worst to lose. Without it you start to go insane. But it always seems like the first thing to logically go. What's your solution now? I have two jobs so that I can pay of debt more quickly. Once I'm in the red again, I cut loose, blow that popsicle stand and start living. Right?

For now I just need a drink.

@battykissinger:
Drinks good, just don't lose grip because if already in debt, booze can be an expensive hobby!

My solution for now is not working fulltime but studying.
It nearly did me in and I rather study now to get a good job then work without a real future.
Once I'm done studying I want to get a job for 3 days a week because I'm just mentally unfit for full week 8 to 5.
Imagine when I have bloody kids, sure my husband will work but that'll halve the income innit? So gotta get them to school/whatnot, find something of a small job inbetween the morning and schools end and then pretend life ain't heavy? Who invented this?

The hard part is adjusting life to your own needs and what the world expects of you I suppose.

You sure about that?  Here in Montreal, an old Blockbuster that I have fond memories of visiting just shut down down.  It's been open for more than a decade and it's just now that it's closing down and getting replaced by an RBC.  Also, I'm not sure if it's present elsewhere in Canada, but "Super Club Vidéotron" could be considered Blockbuster's closest competitor here and the Blockbuster that closed has one really close to it.

Last job I had was working outbound at a call center trying to sell insurance for Sears and HBC cards.  The job wasn't so much bad, as it was just monotonously tedious and boring. Where most jobs you can space out for the majority of the time, with this job you have to keep thinking because you got to use the sales pitch. I was always in the top 3 sellers for every night, the management loved me, but I could only stand it for 6 months before I had to go.

The job was mentally exhausting, and when you combine that with getting off work at midnight followed by an hour drive home it was not fun. I was always so tired that I would crawl into bed as soon as I got home, around 1:00am-1:20am depending on the weather, and would always wake up an hour or two before it was time to go to work the following afternoon around 3:00 pm. I literally had zero life outside of that job for 6 months because if I was not at work I was sleep or driving to/from it.

I miss the money, but fuck the job. Also, one night near the end of it all I was so tired coming home that the RCMP pulled me over because they thought I was driving drunk.  I just explained to them that I was getting off work and was half way through a long drive home so I kept nodding off. Since they didn't smell any booze on me they just let me go. Atleast I got an amusing story out of it I guess.

@Coombs: No intention of doing so, thank you very much!

@FluxWaveZ: Really? Well we're thriving here in Alberta. I suppose I spoke too broadly. At least in Edmonton, there is NO competition. Just a few independent video stores--mostly in basements--that serve people who want real films.

@HS21:
 Absolutely, but now I just placate everyone I can by bending the rules. Unless they're an idiot. In which case I am smarmy and charming back. I try to keep myself amused. The company continually changes rental policy in a major way every two or three months, so people just get confused and annoyed. At least the clientele are pleasantly working class there. The bakery customers are pretentious, demanding, and rude. They also have money.

@TaliciaDragonsong:
 I study too. And write. And try to sleep. And go to the gym. Something will give. Maybe I can trade my humanity for organized machine-mind-body. I'm an optimist. I think that would be thrilling. Things are good. Maybe the promise of a drink or a new day on the horizon... that's enough to keep me happy. Why isn't everyone else?

@Jeust:
 Your dedication and fervour is appreciated--but be your own leader.

@battykissinger:
Well as long as your debt isn't so bad it needs your every waking minute of attention all I can tell ya is take it easy.
Life's pretty long granted you survive it till a old age, so there's little need for rush.
I mean lots of people do nothing with their life and still turn it round in the end, important thing imo is to feel good and do something you like.
We're not machines and hopefully never will be!

@crusader8463: Really good story. It's a horror story. You should throw in a few cheesy adjectives to dramatize it, and publish that shit! Print it off on 250 8.5" by 11" pages (preferable multiple colours of page) and paste those around your community. Couldn't hurt, could it? I'm glad the pigs didn't rape you based on their suspicions. I've hear stories...

@Jeust:  I don't particularly care what the world expects of me--but I do care what I can give to the world. Don't we all? What I do for myself and what I do for the world are one and the same, I hope. I try to live like how the world should be. Perhaps I don't succeed (the world should not work all day), but I do try, and I discuss it. That's important, the communication. To be involved. Right?

@cnlmullen: You're a saint! Enlightened! Bodhisattva! A learned man! [also, good use of bolding

@TaliciaDragonsong: True. I'm always inspired by Charles Bukowski. A loser who worked for the post office for years, and drinking himself half to death. Then at thirty-five he decided to begin writing again, and half-way through his life began exploring poetry. He sometime after became a truly brilliant poet, who simply could transcribe exactly what he saw. (still remained a loser though). Same story goes for Harvey Pekar, the writer for the comic book, American Splendor. We do what we will when we do. I think you've got it too planned out still, sister. But who am I to talk!

I currently work 11.5-14 hrs daily, I am supposed to have sundays off, but I've had to work the the last 3.. My stack of games is getting so far ahead of me it's absurd, I managed to finish REACH a couple days ago.. I don't know what I'm gonna do when New vegas comes out..  But I make pretty decent money $36 ST, $54 OT  and I get alot of overtime so there is no way I'm gonna piss off my employer..  Today I finally got a half day off and was told that I could have the weekend off, but about an hour ago my boss called and asked me to come in tomorrow.. OH well at least tomorrow is all OT....

@Gamer_152: Oh, I'm really not trying to play the sympathy card here! I'm only a few thousand dollars in debt from travelling and school. It will be payed off in a month or two. So no, it's not really tough. It's just... unpleasant. And it's not something people should live for/like.

@bluecollaralaskan: Jeepers, brother! Do you have a cocaine habit or something? Where's all that money going? What do you need it for? You'd better have a smashing house, and an excellent record collection, and a perfect trophy wife. I don't mean to preach, but I hope you're doing something good with your life.

Yup. Two of my fellow bartenders got fired and quit one week, and I had to pick up all of their shifts, which meant 10-11 double shifts for 9 days in a row. I mean, sure I made $1500 bucks, but I wanted to kill myself, and a dozen other people.

Now I am delightfully unemployed, engaged to my cute little sugar momma, and finishing my degree.

@Jeust: Breed, huh? Well, I'm glad you've got your sexual priorities worked out. Propagate your little revolutionary children. Some people dream of having enough kids for a basketball team, you dream of having enough kids to topple a thinly veiled autocratic society! You should get an addiction. I find it gives you things to write about. Or makes you need to write. William S. Burroughs sort of (accidentally) (!) shot his wife... and he could never get it out of his life, so he wrote and wrote and wrote to try to escape. Charming, no?

@Skullo: Hey man, anyone who's tired is tired! Any ways you've found to give yourself more energy? Eating right and working out is always a start for me.

@Mrnitropb: Jeepers! Sometimes you've got to go through hell to learn what you want, or what you have. I hope you and your sugar momma do well!

@Jeust: Don't worry, going on a homicidal killing spree would have required A LOT more energy than I had left in me at that time. Trust me, I fell asleep in the middle of getting oral pleasure, that's how beat I was.  And I find that a caffeine addiction is more than enough fodder for my writing, though it is reassuring to know that Absinthe is now legal in my area.

@battykissinger: Sadly, that chase to get through to discover what you want, is more of a steeple chase, or a triathlon, than a mere sprint. Keep up the good work, it is reassuring as a person to know there are still people out there willing to work an honest job or two to bootstrap themselves up out of whatever hole they might be in.

No drug habits these days, just workin to get ahead, the cost of living here is pretty high, but luckily now that I'm divorced I can hide my money in a safe, and save it for a rainy day.. But part of being in my industry is that you are just expected to work all the time, and if you don't you become known as one of "those" guys that don't like to work, and with ten guys waiting in line to take your job at all times, you don't wanna be one of "those" guys, which means that if the foreman wants you to work, you just go to work, and act like you love every minute of it...

@blacklabeldomm: My point is precisely that people shouldn't have to work like that. It's certainly admirable that she did, and I understand the necessity. But I hate a world in which such things are necessity. What do people do now, you think? Are they supported by other means, or do they simply neglect their responsibilities?

@bluecollaralaskan: That's reasonable. Well, don't work that way forever. It won't get you anywhere, will it?

@Three0neFive: Only one in a city with a GPA of about a million, all of the others have closed in the last six months. And Movie Gallery, the other competitor closed down about four months ago. Just us, Bustin' tha Block.

@Mrnitropb:
 Appreciate the enthusiasm. We all need to be a little more enthusiastic, no?
