Games I Finished in 2022, part 2

List items

  • Finally got around to playing this and really enjoyed it. The repeating level architecture is very cool and makes exploring feel awesome while not letting you get too lost.

  • Boy I really loved this platformer, chewed through it over a couple late nights. Love the "tiny character, big world" aesthetic - combine that with a 3d platformer that is snappy and fun to play plus Pikmin influence and that checks a lot of boxes for me. Doesn't feel padded at all either, you progress through the levels pretty quickly but also have a lot of leeway to explore.

  • "cool" puzzle game, finished all the puzzles pretty quickly

  • There's some neat stuff about this game (particularly the gross art style), but there were some design choices that kinda turned me off, I feel like it could use a couple big design tweaks. The levels were easy to get lost in, and the combat is not all that fun - they don't really ease you into it either, you are given a weapon but only use it as a sort of tool for a while which is a little confusing to the player. I also wish some of the puzzles were more creative - a lot of times it felt like basic stuff but all the mechanisms just happened to be covered in a patina of flesh.

  • Sort of middle of the road out of the Wadjet Eye games I have played.

  • I don't know nothin' bout One Piece but there sure seems to be a lot of ridiculous characters as part of said world. This was actually one of the better Musous I have played, combat-wise.

  • Boy when I started this, I was like "hey, this is pretty good, why are people always dunking on it?" But my enjoyment was a pretty constant downward slope from there - the final level is a gauntlet that took me like 90 minutes to finish following by a extremely frustrating last boss.

  • I thought this was even better than the first game, which I adored. Just really fantastic all around, from the visuals and gameplay and music, to the performances and writing. I thought the character arcs in this game were very satisfying, and I was full on weeping by the end.

  • This came out of nowhere to land in my top 10 games of the year; it's a very satisfying murder mystery deduction game that really forces you to piece things together yourself. I wasn't initially sold on the art style, but it looks cool in motion, with each level being a weird little GIF, and it grew on me by the end.

  • This was a breath of fresh air about playing through Sonic Unleashed! I honestly had a lot of fun with this (I was into it enough to beat the game in a few days, took me close to 20 hours), despite it feeling a bit like a lot of discrete ideas just thrown at the wall. But I appreciate Sonic Team swinging for the fences and trying something riskier. I honestly think a refined follow-up to this game could be pretty darn neat.

  • Amazing game, loved it. I think it will end up being a bonafide survivor horror classic down the road.

  • Okay little game, it really lives or dies based on its level design though. Some of the sections were far more fun than others given the traversal tools you have.

  • Great game with fantastic cute animal art, great writing, and lovable characters. Does a good job of being equal parts "spooky town with a secret" and heartfelt & funny.

  • Really enjoyed this one!

  • Cute and very fun platformer! Love a good grappling hook in a game.

  • This really scratched my itch for a video game-ass video game. Just a lot of straightforward fun.

  • Really great reimagining of a great game. Tough but a lot of fun.

  • Glad Square Enix is putting out these interesting mid-tier RPGs lately. I liked the combat system of this quite a bit, definitely very different than a lot of their output. The story was okay, it's mainly a macro-level political maneuvering tale, but you occasionally get glimpses into the individual characters (who all have amazing names).

  • Pretty cool bitesize experience. Tells a solid story with a neat main mechanic of searching the galaxy.

  • This game is neat when you get in a real flow state, but it can be pretty darn challenging during some of the combat encounters. I also found most of the bosses to be frustrating in a not fun way.

  • This is some real OG God of War throwback nonsense, was a fun game to turn my brain off and enjoy. (I think this did originally come out on XBLA, which makes sense, feels of that era).

  • Finally got around to playing the third one of these, still a really fun series with great music. Actually closes out the narrative arc in an interesting way too, pretty good sendoff for the trilogy.

  • This may be the worst game I played this year, was forcing myself to finish it by the end. There were quite a few levels with bad platforming and a lot of insta-death nonsense (see: the very early train level) that I struggled through. Also makes me think those old Gungrave games may not be as good as I remember, haha; this new one seems to play exactly like the old ones with zero attempt to modernize in any way. Evil West is a much much better example of a throwback game like this that is actually fun to play.

  • I thought this was a pretty decent trippy/spooky experience, cool setting for a game. And the whole mind/body/spirit mechanic was pretty interesting, wish it had been fleshed out more though. Overall, I wish the game had gotten a little weirder than it actually ended up being.

  • Great train + factory game, and a miracle of a Switch port. Played a ton of this (and it is a meaty game with a lot of campaign levels).

  • Very stylish and fun game, gets pretty darn difficult by the end. I have not yet been able to even beat the first level of the remixed version of the campaign you unlock when you beat the original game, if that tells you anything.

  • I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this Metroidvania, it's well-crafted and has some pretty fun combat. Took me about 20 hours total to 100 percent complete it (and I liked it enough to do so).

  • Really good detective game that involves really looking at a lot of plants.

  • Ending the year with the best.
