This happened to me about 2 hours after I downloaded the 3.01 update.  I have the 60gb PS3 with backwards compatibility.  Sony said to pay them $150 to fix the problem.  I was furious!

I opted to buy an 80gb PS3 online on eBay.  It came with 11 games and I got everything for $200.  I was planning on selling the 11 games for $50 or so to recoup some of the money.  I just wanted to avoid paying Sony.

Well the new PS3 worked just fine after playing on the old software 2.76 for about 4-6 hours.  I then went to play one of my games online and it prompted me to download the latest system update.  I figured it would be ok since this is a newer version PS3 and different model.  After 1 hour of use with the new software... FREEZE.  Now no media disc is recognized in my PS3 that I just bought!  So now I have two PS3's that are victims of this firmware instal.

I came across a good article online about this:

It is true, and I am proof of this happening.  I've been a loyal customer to Sony ever since I was a kid (I'm now 30 years old).  I take exceptional care of my electronics and have always said great things about Sony and the Playstation products...

This changes everything.  I've written media outlets, the FTC, and BBB... with hopes of someone listening to me.  This is illegal.
