There was an interesting back-and-forth between an Obsidian developer (who worked on New Vegas, which had similar iffiness on the PS3) and Bethesda recently. The dev stated that it was a similar issue that they ran into with Fallout that would require a fundamental change to the PS3 version of the game, but Bethesda was like "naw, man" (which is where this "turn off autosaves" business is coming from).
I guess it comes down to whether or not you forsee yourself playing for several dozen hours before a proper fix sees the light of day.
