Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

I've been following Giant Bomb since day one. From the moment the site launched until now I've been an avid fan of almost every thing the crew here does, but for some reason I've never been inclined to join the community at all. Finally, after all these years I decided to join up as a premium member last month and I have regretted it for a second. Thank you to all the folks here at Giant Bomb. Here's to many more years of quality, thought provoking, and crazy-as-balls entertainment.

Without further ado, I present my top 10 games of 2014.

List items

  • For me there was no question on this one. From the minute I started it up I knew I was playing my favorite game of 2014.

  • Unlike most people, who seemed to gravitate towards the Joust game, my friends and I sank dozens of hours into Super Pole Riders. If playing on the same TV brings people together, then playing on the same controller is practically intimate.

  • My favorite game series of all time returned this year, and what a return it was. The goofy humor, the incredibly dark story, and the silky smooth controls all come together to form just a sample of what will no doubt be the best game of the series, and likely my GOTY for 2015.

  • With all the hundreds of hours my friends and I have put into Brawl over the course of almost every Friday night since it launched in 2008, it was going to take something truly special to surpass that. The latest entry in the series makes some love/hate tweaks, but is still overall a better game.

  • The appeal wore off after awhile, but this shipping simulator was my guilty pleasure for much of the year.

  • A last minute addition to the 2014 lineup. I have no delusions of this being a great game, I know it has a lot of problems and graphics that would've look pretty marginal on the original Xbox. That said, I sank almost 30 hours into the first game, and with this one already shaping up to be more expansive, more fluid, and more fun, I simply can't leave it off the list. I may be a fan of the license, but it would never be enough to carry me through a bad game or even a decent one. No, a game has to truly hook me to get that kind of play time, and GB2 has its hooks in pretty damn deep.

  • I spent most of the year catching up on my backlog, so even games of loved didn't get a full playthrough, Bravely Default included. It would likely be higher on the list if I'd had a chance to play more than the demo, but it's truly saying something if a demo was enough to land it a top spot.

  • Came for the carnage, stayed for the heartfelt story.

  • You could say this game...dug up my nostalgia. :D

  • It's stupid, it's crass, it's derivative, but damn is it a blast when things really get going.
