I kind of figured how this list would end based on what had come up every now and then the last few months but oh my god.

I already feel the hurt at the bottom of my heart sending friends through the Everdoor, I can't imagine how it would have felt having to grieve in real life at the exact same time

@htc: I assume it's because it takes the oxygen away from special, personal titles that fewer of the staff have played yet have held a stronger impression that still deserves love. Eg. Austin Walker's passionate defence of Invisible, Inc.

It works on occasion when they're realigning themselves after last-minute picks and need to move the timeline along (eg. Demons Souls), but I'd personally hate to miss out on an opportunity to hear a potential Invisible, Inc. moment in the discussions

I like Cyberpunk enough to play it from start to finish and I think visually it deserves a more positive shoutout, but I think its art direction is extremely marred by its poor performance.

It's also just really generic in the best and worst possible definitions of the word, as expected of a videogame literally named after its genre. I feel like the mechanical and cultural designs could be lifted from any high-quality concept artist from DeviantART and are often thrown together for little more meaning than just aesthetics or cultural appropriation.

I'll back Ori readily because that soundtrack is a goddamn thematic masterpiece of motifs and instrumental layers for any player that actually bothers to pay attention to it. It's not just noodling around for the sake of "ooh whimsy", there is a storytelling in the music that absolutely elevates the game in a way that would make it a lesser game if it wasn't there.

None of what it does is particularly groundbreaking or innovative but I feel people (especially in games) sometimes tend to devalue things which are familiar but done extremely well, which honestly? Kind of sucks ass

I say this in the same spirit in the way I wish FFVII Could Have Been Higher, but honestly I actually feel more critical of that game because the actual orchestral samples and instrumentation feel rushed and arrangements feel of variable quality at times.

When I put the Ori soundtrack on the stereo it's 3 straight hours of some of the most consistent storytelling and ambience out of all the games on the list. It conjures up which characters are involved, what kind of area/environment the music is set in, how high the stakes are in the sequence compared to other sequences. It fucking *owns*

Super duper thank you for putting into words pretty much where I'm at with Cyberpunk as well. I'm compelled to finish it because the bones of a great game are there and the good things fucking slap hard, but there's so much nothingburger in between the game as a whole is extremely middling at best and absolutely was not worth the pain and misery the development team went through.
