It's Ubisoft. They've been screwing up PC games for a couple of years now.

wow that sucks. i do know that ubisoft sucks with their DRM. i say when a game has horrible DRM, people should actually pirate it. when it's good type steam then don't pirate it. DRM just causes bad problems with people's systems.

I have to say, if I was a big video game publisher, I would problem not even bother with PC ports. You make next to no money when compared to consoles have have to deal with a shit ton more bitching about DRM that is there because the people that aren't complaining about the DRM are just pirating the game so you don;t make money, just lose money on development time.   Also, in response to the I only pirate the game to see if I like it, lets apply the same idea of the a game is like a car that has been used for used games. You can;t just go into a show room and steal a car and then say I only wanted to try it out to see if I would buy it. You get the time that the dealership lets you have and then you read reviews and talk to people that already have that car.    Just realized how trollish and rantish this sounds, eahh, I'll post it anyway. Now come at me bro ;)
Car =/= Pirated software. Comparisons to real world products and stealing have never been accurate.

Hey! Fuck you! :D there i said it :P

also i'm not really saying it so no need to moderate.

Now to the point. Don't buy Ubisoft games on PC. There are plenty of publishers still doing it right on PC. I don't mind some minor, non-intrusive DRM and have no problem buying those games. I just don't buy Ubisoft games anymore, not on PC at least.

@troll93: If "most publishers" should never bother with PC ports, how do you explain the millions upon millions of dollars Steam's been making for the past couple years now.

That money's just waiting there, people actually do spend it, and I know for a fact I spend faaar more on Steam than I do on any console I own. Which is pretty much all of them currently :\

Anyway, Ubisoft sucks balls. I'm glad they make terrible games and don't have any franchises that I really care for anymore.

Why not? In both cases you are supposed to be exchanging currency for a good. Piracy is exactly stealing as you are taking the good without providing the currency exchange. As the old saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it too.
At least in Australia, that's not the legal definition of stealing. If someone pirates software, they can't actually be done for stealing, because nothing has been stolen. Something has been copied, granted, but the original owner, the publisher, hasn't actually lost their product. Any monetary gain they may have lost is purely theoretical. That's why people are prosecuted under copyright legislation, not stealing legislation. In any case, they still does not give publishers the right to bring in constrictive DRMs, in the same way that high levels of car stealing doesn't give car manufacturers the right to ask you prove you own the car every time you want to drive it.

Tomatoes Tamatoes(doesn't really work online). That is more part of our shitty legal code than anything else. The definition that I posed above is the basic outline of the capitalist society.

Actually they have all right in the world. It is a dick thing to do I agree but they can do it if they want. You want them to stop putting shitty DRM into PC games? Drop piracy to a minimal level. Now piracy will never stop, anyone that thinks that is mistaken. But using DRM like this stoped the casual piracy. It alienates the hardcore but in the cooperation eyes, will bring in the casual pirates money.  Will it actually bring in that money? I don't know.
No, legally and morally the two are very different. In the case of stealing, someone has lost actual property or money. In the case of piracy, someone has lost prospective monetary gains, that may have not even ever existed in the first place. Corporations are not losing money from piracy, they are losing prospective money from piracy in the same way they might lose prospective money from a competitor, which is how IMO piracy should be treated, as a competitor. The advantage of piracy is that its cheap, the disadvantages are it complexity, lack of support, illegality, etc. Publishes cannot compete with piracy on a cost front, however by at least not ripping off customers (which they do a lot outside of the US), offering more support and features that pirates can't offer (like multiplayer, like dlc, etc), and greatly improving their retail philosophy (like moving away from physical media), they can cut down on their losses and turn people away from piracy. Restrictive DRM only pushes legitimate customers to the pirates because it's easier to play a pirated version than it is a legal version. And what's more, DRM has actually not stopped piracy at all. There has yet to be a DRM which has not been broken by pirates, so the simple fact is; DRM does not stop piracy.

What does stop piracy is actually engaging with the PC market, rather than attacking it or withdrawing from it (which I see as just the corporate version of sulking because their 20 year old practices no longer work). Steam is the proof of this, not only has it reduced piracy, it has actually made money.

@Inkerman: Very true, more people need to understand the legal difference between stealing and software piracy.

If i steal your car, your car is gone and it needs replacement because you cant use it if it isn't there.

If I make a copy of your C drive while you arent looking, you can still use your computer, and your documents are all there.

If you earned money by selling the contents of your C drive, you still havent lost any money.

However if you want to tell your manager how much each copy is worth, then extrapolate earnings for that year. Then you have lost, as said above, the prospective earnings that you might not have gained in the first place.

If they had any interest in continuing development and support for PC, they would've started a neat PR campaign by now, as Inkerman is on to up here. It's been shown so many times that if you don't actually sexually abuse us, we PC gamers will support your product.

By the way Ubi has been acting, it's quite obvious they want an easy way out of PC gaming. In a few years, maybe during the next generation, they'll pull the same bullshit stunt again - saying that 98% of big franchise game X played copies was pirated on PC, it's not profitable and they'll say bye bye. Why? I don't really know. Perhaps they really aren't making that much money, and feel that the money spent porting could be spent elsewhere.

Publishers are not in the business of being nice. There are in the business of making money. No publisher releases a game on PC if there is no money to be made. Even if game XY sells only 15% on PC compared to consoles thats still 15% no publisher can afford to just lose those (btw. thant number was just made up for the sake of making a point). Add to that that there is no statistic I know that includes digital distribution when it comes to PC game and that a fair share of the PC gaming marked has moved over to DD ... I'm pretty sure there is still a lot of money to be made on the PC. Is it a much as on consoles? Probably not ... but enough to make it worth doing.

Not that I endorse such acts, or support them >.>, but of the couple of Private ...tracker... sites I am a part of Console Rips are one of the most downloaded and used. Hell there are tons of guides to show you how to do it safely now. I myself, have never jumped into that bandwagon, more out of fear of retaliation, but it's there and consoles are getting hurt too. PC is just easier.
