Mother 3 review

Shugosato Itoi, Brownie Brown and Hal laboratories have come up with a masterpiece. The follow up to earthbound and earthbound zero mother 3 is a cute and witty game with tons of references to earthbound. Now translated it's playable to anyone providing you go to their site. And the best part is it is absolutely free. The story tells of a young boy named Lucas, a thief named duster, a tomboy princess who will kick the crap out of you called Kumatora, and Flint the father of Lucas still searching for his brother Claus. It's amazing music and excellent battle system is sure to win your heart.

Short reviews but yea, amazing game.  The way they can convey emotion using just animated sprites...  Best JRPG of the decade probably.

Wrong. Yes, they convey emotion, but they can never decide on which emotions to convey. "Hmm, do I want the monkey to be comic relief or tragic figure? How 'bout both?" Also, not the best of this decade. There are better.

Yea, because the monkey goes the entire game doing things that the developers do not want you to laugh at under any circumstances. Wait....

In what way? Also, hard to cry for Lucas' dad going into depression over the death of his wife when he's impotently beating everybody nearby with a flaming log. That's what I do on a Saturday night: get a hobo drunk, give him a flaming log, and watch the theatrics. Kinda hard to cry at a time like that.

@Video_Game_King:  Because an entire game doesn't have to just be depressing or humorous.  They convey the emotions of any particular scene remarkably well.  Lucas's dad flipping out is the sort of complex emotions that games rarely convey.  What about the corrupted Drago or even what's his face (the arabian guy who falls off the tower and becomes a cyborg mind slave of sorts -- it's a bit hard for me to remember because I played through the game in Japanese).  Basically everything fucked up that happens in the story is because of one individual whom I won't spoil for anyone just randomly reading this.

I'm OK with conveying multiple emotions in a game; I just want one scene to decide what emotion it wants to convey. You can't expect me to laugh AND cry simultaneously; you do that, and I'm gonna sit there, confused, wondering what the hell I'm supposed to feel. As for Fassad, he's another example of emotional confusion. He's portrayed as this amoral dickhole throughout the entire game, then written off as "oh, he's not so bad" at the end. Again, if you want me to feel sorry for him, give me reasons to feel sorry for him throughout the game. Imagine if you were playing Final Fantasy VI, and near the end, they just decided to make Kefka a tragic figure for no reason. Wait... fuck.

Best game in the mother series. And right to the point, a lean 22 hour experience. Play it every year. I enjoy the juxtaposition. There's a thin line between laughable whimsy and horror, the game strattles it. And there's a thin line between comedy and tragedy, the game strattles it.

Name a single game that carries more sincere emotional tones without resorting to pretentious bullshit.

Name one what? The game thing? There are tons of games capable of conveying multiple emotions over the course of one game without confusing the player. For example, Earthbound. It was pretty clear when I should laugh (Buzz Buzz's death), when I should cry (I can kinda imagine Giygas, given the rape thing), and when I should be confused (only one time: Magicant). It's not like Mother 3, which leads me to believe the ending is a downer, and then pulls an emotional whiplash and says that everything is fine.

Mother 3 wasn't really different dude. You laugh at the underwater part, then immediately after you're on an island, and shit is more serious. I don't know what was so confusing for you.

The game manages to play up its funny moments and serious ones well, without either of them stepping on each others toes. During one act you may enjoy the comedian moments of Salsa or Rope Snake and later you have a heart wrenching moment where Lucas has longing wishes to see his mother again. However, they don't damage one another, but they don't have to be mutually exclusive in a game.

Great game, but Earthbound is just classic. It is still up there. The one thing I didn't like though was the new battle system. I beat the whole game, but never really got the hang of it. (More like button mashing and getting short combos.)
