Worst Moms Ever

While not as common/ubiquitous as lousy and abusive fathers, horrible mothers nevertheless show up in fiction now and again. These are the worst of them.

List items

  • Pretended to love her daughter as a means of manipulating her, only to then betray her to Diablo who took her body as a vessel, effectively condemning her.

  • Not as bad as many of the others here, granted. But still consistently shown to be unpleasant and verbally and emotionally abusive to her son.

  • Moreso in the books than the show, but even in the latter she was a lousy mother however much she may have genuinely loved her kids. Not to mention that her last child's death is basically her own fault (not that she'd ever admit it).

  • The Descendants version, who raised her son to believe that all dogs were vicious animals that attack boys who don't behave, instilling in him a fear of dogs.

  • Wants her daughter Angela on her side, but given her psychopathically anti-human disposition, she's effectively alienated her own daughter something fierce.

  • When portrayed as Snow White's wicked stepmother, she (along with Cinderella's) is one of the definitive examples of the archetype.

  • While she seemingly cares about her daughter Morrigan, it is later revealed that Flemeth keeps herself alive by leeching the life-force of her children, and that Morrigan has been set up to be the latest victim of this.

  • Unsurprisingly for a Nazi, she's a terrible mother. Enough so that her daughter chooses to turn on her and join the resistance.

  • In the versions of the myths where she cast Hephaestus from Mount Olympus just for being born ugly and deformed. So much for a mother's unconditional love.

  • All of the Runaway's parents are terrible, and Janet Stein is no exception.

  • Cassandra Cain's rather abusive and unloving mother who saw her as more of a living weapon to be forged and used instead of a child to be loved.

  • The definitive Wicked Stepmother, after all

  • Depending on the episode

  • The Descendants version. Notably, the Angelina Jolie version is very much NOT this, her love for Aurora being the thing that redeems her.

  • While she does technically love her daughter Lyra, she's also not above manipulating and even harming her, and either way she works for a fascist theocracy that kidnaps and tortures children, so...

  • Foster-Mother in this case, being the source of Credence Barebone's angst and anger...as well as his being an Obscurial.

  • Killed her own children to spite her husband, so...

  • Though a far more tragic and sympathetic example than most here, she was, strictly speaking a neglectful mother.

  • Between her and Agnes Skinner, I get the sense that Matt Groening or someone he knows had some really bad experiences with an elderly mother figure...

  • The devil on her son Malekith's shoulder. Also possibly has incestuous feelings for him (squick).

  • Another bad foster-mother. And, as the sequel cartoon to the film reveals, a bad biological one too.

  • Initially a pretty good mom actually, being shown as genuinely loving and even sometimes giving her son good advice in early episodes. But then, like her husband, she got flanderized into a just plain bad parent.

  • What else do you call someone who abandoned her own son to save herself?

  • The reason her son Norman turned out as bad as he did.

  • Gave birth to a child in Forever Evil.

  • Got her son killed. A son she conceived by rape no less. 'nuff said.

  • Mother of Clea

  • Mother of the heroic Lor-Zod and a general psychopath, so she naturally fits this.

  • Descendants version, since she has a daughter there

  • Nothing gets between her and her fanatical devotion to Khorne...including the lives of her children.

  • Post-corruption, anyway.
