Star Wars fever. There is no cure.

I wake up one morning finding my body drift towards my DVD collection and my eyes floating to my copy of Episode III. Why? Exactly like every douches answer to their penis. It has a mind of it's own. The last time I remember watching a Star Wars movie was back in 2005. I watched this movie to it's entirety. I wondered to myself, where does the Universe go from here? At this point I've caught the fever. I went down to my local book store and browsed their book collection. Until I stumbled upon a kid that has a comic. A Star Wars comic. Do they really go this far? Movies, TV shows, books, comics, and video games. At this point I've seen them all. So to intrigue my curiosity, I bought a few. Knights of the Old Republic.

Zayne Carrick is the protagonist in this story. Or is he the antagonist? Either way he is a main character. He's a Padawan or a student if no one has heard of Star Wars before. Not just any student though, a special one. He's not the kind of special you see in the movies or books on the other hand. He's special as in clumsy. They use that word clumsy a lot for Zayne. Though the way he keeps getting away from the order and the republic. I would think he's more of a "smart" clumsy. At the end of one of the comics, he swears revenge on his master. He has that serious look, like he will go into training, get to know the force, and kill him. Apparently not. He goes back into his "smart" clumsy scheme again. Then again, I'm only so many comics in. Maybe I won't be disappointed. Hopefully these writers won't take my feelings and squeeze them into a grinder and make "blue milk" for Luke Skywalker to drink with his Aunt and Uncle.

I have never seen a Star Wars movie, played a Star Wars game, or read a Star Wars book. Why? Because Star Wars is garbage, that's why. Just go and watch The Hidden Fortress six times, it's far superior.

Actually, I probably should go watch 4 - 6. Everybody says they're seminal films, at least A New Hope. I will rectify this one day. :)

@Toxic:@Feanor: My opinion should absolutely be ignored. It is one that I hold without justification, I freely admit; it is one that I hold purely on the basis that I do not like science fiction and I do not like fantasy.

@ZanzibarBreeze:  Star Wars is one of those things that transcends it genre. It would not be the universal hit it is if it only apealed to sci-fi/fantasy fans.

And I find it a little weird that you dislike those genres so much. Half of your video game collection is comprised of science fiction and fantasy titles.

@ZanzibarBreeze: I've never seen a star wars movie either.  The only exposure i've had to star wars, in fact, is KOTOR....and you should go play it =D

Anyone new to Star Wars should avoid all of the new bullshit George Lucas signed his name on and instead just watch the original trilogy.

True. Perhaps my sentiment is aimed more at those genres as they are portrayed in books and in films. You know, like those fantasy books where they're part of a series that's made up of six books and each book is 1000 pages long. No thanks. And I just really don't like the whole Elves and Goblins and "let's cast a spell, boys" vibe they've got going on. Similarly, science fiction that is fantasy in space. I really don't like spaceship warfare, for instance. I harbor deep resentment for these things.

As for my collection, well, I'm one of those people that buys games and doesn't actually play them. Talking PlayStation 3: Dead Space I consider horror; I haven't played Oblivion; haven't really played Fallout 3... I guess you could consider Half-Life 2 to be "science fiction". There's a good case to be made; I just don't think of it as that. Same for Red Faction: Guerrilla. That's just razing buildings with a sledgehammer in the distant future. Probably another one of my shortcomings when it comes to genre distinctions, and that's totally fair. In fact, the only fantasy game I've really played the hell out of is Final Fantasy X. (Also, you've reminded me to update my collection lists. Those things are way old, and I haven't even added whole consoles yet. One day.)

I don't play the Elder Scrolls series, for instance. I much prefer games that are anchored in the real world. Whenever I do play these genres it's for blockbuster titles, such as the Mass Effect series -- you understand what I mean. Just the other day there was a poll in General Discussion about which game has been the best this year; Mass Effect 2 won (I think) but I opted for Red Dead Redemption. Barring some amazing outing, Rockstar's Western is my favorite and my game of the year.

I should apologize, though. I have unfairly sidetracked this thread; totally my fault.

I'm a Star Wars fanboy, and proud of it! I would really like to know why you think it's garbage, when you have never seen the movies or played the games/read the books?

@ch13696: The expanded Universe is a dark temptress indeed. Since you have already jumped down the rabbit hole I will give you some suggestions for where to go from here.

The novel that got me hooked on reading Star Wars novels, let alone flat out reading period, is a book called Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. It's set some time after the KOTOR game and is written by one of the lead writers of the game called Drew "I will not try to spell that guys last name". At the moment there are three novels in the series and they are amazing. I'm still waiting to get the last one, but I doubt it will disappointed.

From there I started the Republic Commando series written by Karen Travis. She has hands down become one of my favorite authors after reading that series, and has by far wirrten one of the most interesting series of books in Star Wars. You will ether love her work or hate it. Myself, I loved it since it showed the Star Wars Universe from the eyes of a soldier and not another god like Jedi or Sith. It gets into talking about how non Jedi see Jedi, and how they are pretty much disliked and untrusted by everyone in the universe. It doesn't show Jedi as these perfect beings that can do no wrong and who cannot be stopped like most series do, but normal people who just happen to be able to do extraordinary things. And whom fuck up a lot in the process.

I also read the nine volume Legacy of the Force series and it was pretty good. It takes a book or two to get going but it's a hell of a ride. It's set around forty to fifty years after the movies and focuses on Luke, Leia, Han, even Bobba Fett, but a large part of it is about their kids.It references a lot of what happens in what I believe is the Dark Nest series of books, but you don't need to read them to follow along. Still though, I would hold off reading LotF if you can since it would be kind of silly to go back and read the many other novels knowing what happens. When you do get to it thought you should enjoy it greatly.

I also read a handful of various one off's that I cannot recall the name of. If you want to give the comics a go I cannot recommend enough the Star Wars Empire and Star Wars Rebellion series by Dark Horse. Also the series you mentioned in the OP is very good as well, though I kind of lost interest in it around mid way through it's run.

If you want to stick to stories set in the Old Republic then you picked a perfect time to get into it. If you pick up the Darth Bane novels then by the time you are done reading them there should be three or four more Old Republic novels out by then. With the MMO coming out the Bioware writers working on the game are also writing novels set in that time period. I can't verify their quality since they have not been  published yet, but I have yet to read a bad novel written by anyone who works at Bioware. If you get hooked on their novels like I have, you may want to give the Dragon Age novels a look at as well.

Long live the Empire. As a child I cheered for the guys in white, screaming at the Stormtroopers to take cover and take the time to place their shots. To any naysayers I'd just give the original trilogy a chance (The Empire Strikes Back is the best one of the bunch).

On a side note: Not enough games let me play as a Stormtrooper or a Sith Lord to kick Rebel and Jedi ass.

Well, if you want me to feed your Star Wars fever, I can recommend you watch the Star Wars Prequel reviews by this guy.

Watch this video and you'll have a real fever for what's actually good about Star Wars, although it might leave a bad taste in your mouth in relation to those comics and Expanded Universe.

@crusader8463: I can respect your opinion. My friend told me about some of the books you were mentioning. I meant to go buy them but got side tracked by the comics. What I should do is since I have Kindle on my iPhone I should buy it on there. Or maybe download a chapter to see if I will be sucked into that universe.

I should mention to everyone that I do like Episode's I-III. You think I may be brainwashed by George Lucas but that's definitely not the case. However, I do like Episodes IV-VI better. Yes, George did pay attention more to his computer animators than his actors. But, thats besides the point. Besides the graphics, what kind of story was he trying to tell? What was he getting at? Watch those movies again. I know it won't destroy your mind to do that.

Whoa, how can you not like science fiction or fantasy? That kind of encompasses a huge amount of books, comics, movies, video games, and even music to an extent. How can you make such a sweeping generalization like that?

You know what my cure was? Not watching them when I was a kid. I watched A New Hope and thought it was alright but I really didn't feel like I wanted to explore anymore of the fiction. I think it's because I enjoy reading Science Fiction. Film Science Fiction is different than it's literature counterpart. Now I want to go read Foundation again.
