What's your favorite photograph?

Check out some of the best pictures on Panoramio:

The Best of Panoramio Part I

I have become very fascinated with photography lately. Its probably because I have been traveling quite a bit in the last couple of years. I still don't own a good camera, but its definitely on my list of things to buy next year. I am looking to buy a not too expensive DSLR. America is such a beautiful country and my PowerShot does not justice.

I have discovered a great community for sharing photographs on Panoramio. Most of my pictures have been selected for Google Earth. So its a matter of pride for me.

I encourage you to check out the link I posted. So what's your favorite photograph?

I think travelling or just getting out of your normal routine is great for creativity in general. Seeing things that you take for granted every day can stagnate your ability to think creatively, unless you have the ability to see things in a new light. Now that daily inspirational quip is out of the way, I don't have a favorite photograph per se as much as I have favorite photographers. I think people who churn out consistent, thought provoking work are far more interesting than any one single image they produce or capture. All this camera phone bashing is funny, because it's not always the medium but the photographer that makes the difference. A fast and accurate weapon indeed helps, but its the soldier behind the gun that has the ability to pull the trigger and make the shot. Chase Jarvis has an entire book of just iPhone photos that are very good, and its all done with a 2MP camera.

So anyway, some favorite photogs are: David Nightingale, Zack Arias, Chase Jarvis, David Jackson, Joe McNally, Cliff Mautner, Jeremy Cowart, and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head. I tend to appreciate more commercial and editorial work than purely artistic or aesthetic photography.

That picture is heartbreaking. Just make me feel so fortunate for being here. Man, I swear, I won't complain again.

Your website is brilliant. Great job.

Couldn't agree more with these statement, made evident by the hundreds of photos I took in Tokyo last year when I was living there for 3 month - all on my iPhone. I regret not using a "real" camera over there, but the photos i took have a certain charm to them made possible only by a shitty camera phone. Some of favourites:

Nowhere near as good as that Chase Jarvis guy though. I just checked out his work and his iPhone stuff is incredible.

Pretty much any photo with me in it. I'm a narcissistic  bastard. Pretty sure the abomination above has given me epilepsy.

I wrote a thread about my favourite photo some time ago but nobody replied. So here it is:

 The Falling Man
 The Falling Man
Technically speaking, this is a perfect photo. The lines, colour, composition, everything is perfect. But it's the story behind the photo that makes it so powerful. Taken by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew on September 11, it captures an unknown man falling to his death from the World Trade Center. It was run in many newspapers across the world, some on the front page, and upset a lot of people. Understandable, since to look at this image you're seeing a man moments from death, yet immortalized on film. It's a powerful and confronting image, one that demands an emotional response, one that symbolizes the horror of the September 11 attacks.

That's a tough one. Probably the picture Stanly Kubrick took of himself.

True. I agree. The scourge of our existence are cell phone cameras. People seem to think they know photography by being able to use a cell phone. I don't mean to hate on people, but that's just sad.

I love your first two photos! I don't have one favourite of my own, but I've posted the photos I consider my best here: http://adventuresonfilm.tumblr.com/. I got into photography the same way you did, traveling around Europe. I started with a Canon Powershot, but now have a Canon DSLR, the Rebel XSi. I love it! It's a huge difference from a point and shoot. I still don't quite fully know how to use it yet, and I've had it for just over a year now. I should really take the time to learn it well.

Thanks dude. I'll check your work on Flickr. Also, I was leaning more towards Canon for the digital SLR. They seem to have the best collection. That's just an impression though. I don't claim to know much about these cameras. But I am doing my research.

I really hate shitty photography, and it's all too common. That's why good photography really stands out. If I see a photo I like, I'll usually download the highest resolution version available and make it my background, which I have set to change every 30 minutes. Most of them I won't post because I don't have the copyrights and I don't want to look through the tens of thousands of pictures in the pool where I got most of my photos to find the original postings. One picture I do know where I got is number 24 from this boston.com Big Picture. Those boston.com folks do good work.
