2012

This is a list from someone who didn't play much in 2012. Like, I can't even manage a top ten list. I hope to replay and post proper write-ups for my top 5. Until then I have some comments on games 6 and up.

Many entries I never beat 100% (and probably won't.) In fact, I bought a couple games and straight up did not play them. Enjoy!

List items

  • FTL combines the sense of exploration with frustrating, masochistic gameplay. Those two essential keys to a rougelike fit so well in the setting of DEEP SPACE that FTL has become one of those "don't ever uninstall" type games. You can play it anytime and expect a unique, or at least memorable journey. Great job.

  • The difference in depth between the two shanks is similar to a bathtub compared to one of those outside pools you wash your dog in. At least the outside pool is, you know outside, and closer to the ultimate goal of an amazing water park with huge twirly slides you have to be a certain height to ride.

Shank 2 is fun as hell, but some concepts such as combos, rhythm, an interactive environment have a huge potential ceiling and I don't think Shank 2 is anywhere close to it.

  • I like this game. I wish the setting and overall theme were even more colorful and over-the-top style to help separate it from the Diablos of the world. A stylistic boost like that could propel TL to a League of Legends or Team Fortress 2 status-- wildly popular and enjoyable and often (unfairly) discarded by purists. Daydreaming about a world with that kind of Torchlight sparks a little disappointment in 2012's product, but like I said, I like this game.

  • I'd like to believe I'm not done with this game, but each time I think about re-installing, I'm discouraged by how messy the game feels.

First, 20GB recommended space, then the thought of rummaging through waves of unsatisfying kills, (Hard Reset should have warned games how boring killing robots can be) an unconvincing story I didn't give a shit about, even the wasteland I grew to love in the first game feels extra messy in 2. It's not a bad game.

  • Dreadfully boring. People warned me, "Alex! The game is cool and nice for about an hour minutes and then it's boring!" Those people were right. Maybe do something more progressive in the platforming section of the game, the survival part was just fine.

  • Here's the part of the list where I:

    1. Played too short a portion to place it any higher

    2. Reeeeeeeally fucking hated it.

Syndicate falls into group one. That is all.

  • No idea why I didn't play more than five minutes of this. I was excited for the game, had an enjoyable five minutes, then uninstalled after weeks of leaving it idle.

Shit, even the end-of-year write ups make me want to play again. I am really at a loss here.

  • I played this for three hours and enjoyed myself.

But much of the praise comes from resemblance to nostalgic titles like Contra, Gunstar Heroes, and I'll be damned if it's not the the first (free to play flash game) Intrusion.

The throwback novelty wears off pretty quickly if you're not doing anything interesting with level design or gameplay (See FTL, they did a good job with the throwback feel)

  • This is a run-of-the-mill shooter without the gorgeous backdrop of the outer-space HALO universe that I personally don't know much about. This is an o.k. game, but anyone unironically praising its "combat puzzles" should check out this year's, Hotline Miami instead.

  • Fuck this shitty trash-heap of a game. AWARD: Video game so bad I was nearly offended

  • AWARD: Most acclaimed video game I left sitting on my hard drive

  • AWARD: 2nd-Most acclaimed video game I left sitting on my hard drive. What a terrible award.
