Starcraft II's Matchmaking Flaws

I'm not too familiar with how the matchmaking system in SC2 works, and maybe this is just me ranting because I'm a little annoyed, but I feel like I should point out how it is clearly flawed in some way.
I'm not very good at Starcraft nor at RTS games in general. I and two of my friends are in a 3v3 bronze league together and play maybe 5-6 matches a day. This past week, the matchmaking system has put us up against opponents who were marked "Slightly favored." Because the word 'slightly' was included, we assumed that they were just a little better than us; maybe higher ranked in bronze or low-ranked in silver. After being horribly and embarrassingly demolished by these players, I decided to check what they were ranked. I was left scratching my head and cocking an eyebrow at the fact that Battle.net's matchmaking system had put 3 low-ranked bronze leaguers against 2 gold players and one platinum player. That is not slightly favored. That is severely outmatched. I had assumed that it was some sort of one-time mistake, but the same thing happened more than five times in a row. We kept being put up against people who were ranked in leagues far above ours, and we kept losing because of it. Losing so many times in a row discouraged us and we stopped playing for a few days afterward. I'm realize that I'm doing nothing more than complaining because I lost, but my complaint is: what's the point of even having a matchmaking system if it doesn't pair us against players we have even a chance of winning against?
