Human Entertainment/Grasshopper Manufacture lineage

This is a list tracing the lineage stemming from Human Entertainment, an important game developer who ceased operations at the turn of the millenium, but spawned various other companies in its wake.

List items

  • 1983-2000, developed a wide variety of games with their output becoming more adventure-focused near the end of their life. The origin of key personnel such as Goichi Suda, Hifumi Kono, Masafumi Takada, and many more. As they closed, Grasshopper, Sandlot, and Nude Maker were formed from the remaining devs, with other devs going to Spike.

  • 1998-. Formed by Goichi Suda (Suda51) for the purposes of making games with creative freedom, it was initially made up of staff who worked on Human's Moonlight Syndrome. Very notable for continuing to use characters and plot points from Twilight Syndrome/Moonlight Syndrome (as well as Suda's Fire Pro entries) to this day in Suda's "Kill the Past" storyline, despite not actually owning the IP rights.

Masafumi Takada and Akihiko Ishizaka of Human initially worked here, but left for Spike/Spike Chunsoft around 2010.

  • 1999-. Beginning operation as a unit shortly before the bankruptcy, they were officially incorporated in 2001. Sandlot is most known for their various mecha games and their Earth Defense Force series. Masafumi Takada of Human does the music for every one of their games.

  • Spike existed for some years before it enters this story, but when Human went bankrupt, several staff members moved to a unit in Spike known as Vaill (this name was later retired). Along with this came the IP rights for Twilight Syndrome, Fire Pro Wrestling and others, and these series were continued here at Spike (though the further TS games ignored Moonlight Syndrome and Suda's works at Grasshopper). Also notable is Yuuyami Doori Tankentai, a game which borrows a lot of style from Twilight Syndrome.

  • 2002-. Formed by Clock Tower director Hifumi Kono, here at Nude Maker he continues to develop games including NightCry, a Clock Tower-style game. For their game Infinite Space, Grasshopper's sound team was contracted to do the soundtrack.

The actual rights to Clock Tower went to Capcom, where they made Clock Tower 3 and a similar game in Haunting Ground, but otherwise they are too big to put on this list.

  • 2005-. Formed by Grasshopper's (formerly Love-de-Lic's) Akira Ueda, where he hopes to make a sequel to his Grasshopper game "Contact" one day. Look into the lineage of Love-de-Lic for more information.

  • 2012-. The result of a merger between Spike and other very important company Chunsoft. Known for developing the Danganronpa series (as well as other adventure games), which featured Takada and Ishizaka as well as numerous references to Grasshopper, Human and Chunsoft adventure games, including an extended Twilight Syndrome sequence.

  • 2012-2020. Formed by Massimo Guarini, director of Grasshopper's Shadows of the DAMNED.

  • 2017-. Formed by seven members of Spike Chunsoft, including Danganronpa key staff such as Masafumi Takada and director Kazutaka Kodaka.
