2019 Game of the Year

List items

  • I've never been into a deckbuilder, and fusing one with a roguelike was enough of a hook to get me in. I played almost 100 hours over my first few weeks, I was so obsessed. I haven't played in months now, but this game had a hold on me in a very special and rare way.

It's rare that game truly hooks me anymore, and almost never without something bugging me or some obstacle to clear before I'm in. Slay the Spire grabbed me and wouldn't let me quit until life basically forced me to.

  • The best way I feel I can sum this game up is that it was a really fascinating journey. I don't really have much patience for puzzles or exploration in games - I honestly do feel like I want my hand held sometimes. Although I did end up referring to guides for parts of Outer Wilds' mysteries, the game left enough of a bread crumb trail to have me hooked and desperate to see how all these puzzle pieces across the universe were connected.

I very rarely find a game that makes my spine tingle, takes my breath away, or gets my heart pumping. Certain revelations and moments in Outer Wilds did just that. I will forever have a complicated relationship with this game, as there were some very frustrating moments for me. However, the overarching journey will leave a lasting memory.

The more I think back about this game, the higher I move it up the list!

  • I feel conflicted about saying this is my favorite game of the year. On one hand, I've never played a game that did such a good job of making me feel like a legendary swordsman. There's a certain clarity that comes when a boss fight finally clicks and I'm standing toe to toe with a previously intimidating enemy. The game has a sense of speed but never too much - every fight feels like a controlled chaos, dictated by my ability to read the enemy. Traversing the environments can be as slow or fast as one needs it to be, with both stealth mechanics and the option to grapple past everything. I feel that FROM has set a new standard both for themselves and for anyone else wanting to iterate on their formula.

On the other hand, I rage quit for months at a time, more than once. I almost feel like approaching this game with experience with other FROM games was both a blessing and a curse. The other games have instilled me with a bit more patience for death than I would normally have. However, I never quite got used to Wolf's mobility, stubbornly standing to fight overwhelming enemies when I could jump, sprint, or grapple away for free.

I can say that despite dropping the game in frustration more than once this year, it continued to live in my head until Jedi: Fallen Order gave me the last little nudge I needed to get back in and finish the job. While there are some aspects that didn't impress me, such as the stealth and the prosthetic tools, Sekiro is a giant leap forward on a combat formula that I thought had hit its peak with Bloodborne. I'm very excited to see what FROM does next.

  • I was really addicted to this game. Really enjoyed the strategy bits, school-sim/anime stuff was so/so and honestly took away from the experience in some aspects. Enjoyed being able to customize my students and watch them grow. Black Eagle story was interesting enough to keep me going 70 hours.

  • More accessible version of fun Sekiro combat + Star Wars power fantasy = very much up my alley. Technical issues drag it down, honestly this would be higher if the game were more polished and perhaps a bit more fleshed out. I appreciate that the story didn't overstay its welcome, however I would have appreciated maybe another planet or some more varied boss fights. Also, Cal is boring.

  • Awesome RPG, normally not into a ton of lengthy text based conversations but this game had me hooked pretty much all the way through. I wish I had time for another playthrough, because I played my character in a boring way.

  • Terrific production value, really well made and effective at what it sets out to do. This game is the complete package, the only reason it's this low is because I hate playing scary games.

  • Very fun premise, Remedy got a lot of mileage out of the setting and supernatural lore and concept of the FBC. Combat was good not great, otherwise this would be higher.
