Some Immediate thoughts and opinions:

  • What first caught my eye was that The Dark Knight Rises has zero nominations. That's right, zero. I gave up on the Academu every nominating Christopher Nolan for Best Director, but it didn't even get a nod in on of the technical categories. It seems that people either completely forgot about it(either due to the shooting or other reasons) or they replaced it with Skyfall as their annual bone to the mass populace.
  • It's great to see Michael Haneke get some nominations. He hasn't gotten much love here in the States, but he is an amazing director. If you have the time, watch The White Ribbon. If you have even more time and you also want to feel bad inside, watch Funny Games.
  • It seems that Lincoln has taken over as the front runner for the major awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Daniel Day-Lewis is a near lock for Best Actor and Spielberg's biggest competition (if he has any) is Ang Lee (speaking of past movies to see, go watch Brokeback Mountain which Ang Lee won Best Director for and deservedly so).

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this year's nominations? Who do you think will win? Who got snubbed? Let us know your opinions!

Did they just shoot one of their awards in the foot? I mean, if Amour is nominated for Best Picture, how can it not win Best Foreign Language Film?

Also, I know the Oscars are what they are. They're very hit and miss. But, jesus fuck Les Miserables!

@Winternet: Because there's a requirement that in order to vote for Best Foreign Language film the voter must actually watch all five of the nominees, unlike in the other categories. The assumption is that Amour got the BP nomination because it's both quite good (I don't know, haven't seen it, but I have faith in Haneke) and had a ton of notoriety. With festival screenings, Cannes love, and screeners abound for a while now it was also quite widely seen by the voters, I assume.

I imagine there's a chance that many of the voters haven't seen a number of the other Best Foreign Language nominees, but since they can't just vote for Amour without actually watching the others there's a chance that one collects a ton of support and manages to beat it. Last year it played out fairly straight with A Separation, the most buzzed about and odds on favorite to win, actually took it down, but in recent history that has not been the case. The White Ribbon, Pan's Labyrinth, Waltz With Bashir, The Class, A Prophet, Incendies, Biutiful, and Dogtooth all failed to win the award when lesser regarded films, at the time of nominations anyway, all secured victories.

I hope Jessica Chastain gets the award for best actress. ZDT was a great movie all around, but her acting was easily the best part.

@FLYmeatwad: Sure, but for the outside viewer it won't make sense if Amour doesn't take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. That said, how many times has a movie been nominated for Best Picture and Best Foreign? Any examples?
