ClassyLime: Best of 2009

List items

  • Uncharted 2 improves on Drake's Fortune in almost every way, with some of the best graphics I have ever seen, much improved gunplay, great animation, good story with memorable characters, superb voicework, a surprisingly good multiplayer and just non-stop set pieces. Truly epic.

  • Being Batman is just awesome in this painstakingly built homage to the caped crusader. Combine a dark atmosphere with amazing combat, great gadgets and stealth mechanics that truly make you feel like the Dark Knight, and you have a badass game. Thankfully, there's no "I'm Batman" to be heard.

  • Great original IP, silky-smooth animations, tight controls and a story of what a real superhero would be like is what brings this game alive and sets it apart from the rest. This game does what most other open worlds fail to do; create a world in which is both believable and supernatural, one that you care about and most importantly, one that is fun to just explore.

  • Killzone 2 defines what a good sequel should be. This game captures that truly elusive "feel" in its shooting that makes it feel powerful and heavy. Add great graphics and a addictive multiplayer to the mix to create one helluva experience. It's also interesting to see how they show that the gungho, meaty "badass" marine is not always a good partner.

  • AC 2 took almost every complaint about its first game, and handily solves each one. The new Renaissance venue is a breath of fresh air, and being able to more easily stab dudes is a welcome addition. The story sets the Da Vinchie Code dial to 11, and whether that's a good or bad thing is based on each players tastes.

  • Even with all the changes IW did to this already amazing shooter, it still feels to familiar to place too high on my list. Still, this is a great game with a exhilarating single player campaign and hectic, addictive multiplayer that always kept me coming back for me, even if I was getting continually trounced.

  • What a way to end the summer. This metroid-vania style game combines the old tried and true side-scrolling platforming and item collection with crisp graphics and amazing level design to create a welcome addition to the XBLM that seems to bring out the OCD in me as I search for every last question mark.

  • Somehow ACIT managed to grab me even where Tools of Destruction failed. That alone should warrant this game merit; for even after many sequels, Insomniac still manages to change and add enough to each iteration to make each game feel unique. All the classic Ratchet and Clank is still here; superb animation, fun weapons and good humor as well as the time puzzles with Clank which are a very welcome change of pace in the game.

  • While the movement and combat is starting to show its age, Episodes is Rockstar at its best, creating great stories and interesting characters that weave themselves seamlessly into the GTA 4 timeline. TBAGT especially feels like a return to the crazy of past GTAs with golden uzis big explosions, which is a good thing.

  • Popcap does it again, with this unique twist on the tower defense style game. Each time you start to feel bored, the game throws you new zombies, plants, modes and neat little tricks that keep the game feeling fresh, and a great sense of humor is always good.
