I went and saw It's Kind of a Funny Story. This movie is just a God. Damn. Delight.

First off, it's gonna be a huge shame that it's gonna be eclipsed by Jackass 3D this weekend. I love Jackass but I feel that Funny Story is such a good movie it should be getting all the attention right now.

A quick plot summary, if you haven't heard of it. Teen feels depressed and is having suicidal thoughts, goes and gets himself admitted into a mental ward in a hospital, meets new people, learns life lessons.

So yeah, pretty simple. But! The number one thing that makes it stand out in my mind, is the way it handles the setting of a mental ward and their patients. Yes, they are weird, but they are all kept very human even when it's making jokes. It also treats the help that a mental ward can give people with utmost respect, which is kind of a rarity in movies that use that setting.

It also has Zach Galifianakis in probably his most down-to-earth role. He still is funny and delivers the laughs when needed, but he really captures the role he's given of a patient in a way that most people wouldn't expect out of him. It's almost like how Robin Williams proved he could do drama with Good Will Hunting, almost. At the very least, it's enough that people really should re-evaluate what roles they think Galifianakis can do.

And, lastly, the movie does do that whole "My parents don't understand me" angle a lot of movies do when they deal with teen problems, but the parents aren't shown as being inattentive. Most movies show the parents as being uncaring and indifferent, but in this one his parents really do want what's best for him, they just don't know what to do or what his priorities are.
