A bet amongst friends

A good friend of mine was kind enough to wake me up before noon the other day just because he "was in the neighborhood." I sluggishly pulled myself out of bed and let him in.

After playing some games, we got to talking about Halo Reach. He says he's gotten over Halo, which I don't believe (for Halo 2 he blasted the Halo theme song all the way to EB). I explain how Reach is sparking my interest in the series again, and he tries to convince me that it's going to tank.

He of course quickly retracted that statement because even he knows if Halo is on the cover it's going to sell well. I continue hyping it, and he's convinced it's not going to sell very well. In fact, he figures it will sell less than Halo 3 did. I of course told him he was mad, and he responded with "well it sure as hell won't beat MW2's sales."

Now I thought about that for about two seconds before agreeing, because how can it compete with a multi-platform game? He took it a step further then, and said, "well it won't even do better than it on the 360 alone."

He had me there. I quickly ran some numbers in my head, and logic told me that it was possible. He laid down a bet saying that if Reach beats MW2's first week numbers on the 360 he'll buy my copy. If it doesn't then I have to buy his. I shook on it immediately.

Without taking into account any forces of nature, the odds are in my favor. Halo 3 had a ridiculous attach rate, somewhere around 30% if I remember correctly, in its first week. At that time there were only about 12 million 360s on the market. Right now (so not including sales up to the release of Reach) 360 sales sit at damn near close to 40 million. That means that in order to beat MW2's first week sales (about 4.9m) I only need Reach to have a 12.5% attach rate on week one. I then thought that the xbox live user attach rate might be more important. The latest numbers I could get were from 2008, where unique users sat around 20 million. Even just using that number, I'd only need a 25% attach rate, which is still lower than that of Halo 3. I'm sure they will sell another few hundred thousand 360s by Reach's release date. I'm also sure that Microsoft will release a special limited super ultimate edition Reach 360 with a 250 gig hard drive to push even more 360s out the door than the game will alone.

On top of that, I'm confident in a couple more things. Come November, I'm sure MW2 will release a new map pack in and around that time to try and retain as many players as they can. This will be necessary because players will probably start to burn out a bit on MW2. Luckily for Bungie, the audience is all but identical for Reach and MW2.

Lastly, Microsoft plans on spending even more money on marketing for Reach than they spent on Halo 3. I don't know if you remember how ridiculous the advertising campaign was for Halo 3, but needless to say Reach's campaign will have to be insane.

So what do you think? Will Reach hit the magic 5 million unit mark in week one? Personally, I think if the marketing is done well, and the Beta is very well received (which I'm sure it will -- aside from maybe those jet packs...blah), Reach could push 6 million units in the first week -- maybe more.

That's all for now! Back to studying....last final on Thursday.

Have a good one!

You have a chance.  I personally have not played ODST for at least 4 months, but I am down for some jetpacks.

Also, what the hell? Last final on Thursday? It's not even May?  Damn my semester system.

I haven't played ODST at all. I'm actually very excited about there not being dual-wielding in this one haha.

And yah, my last one is tomorrow. It's the last day exams could be scheduled as well. Keep in mind I'm in University, and they end earlier usually. That is, of course, assuming you aren't in university haha.

Before noon??  Some friend.

I don't know, man.  Halo Reach isn't called Halo 4, and 5 million in one week is still a big ask.  What happens if Treyarch's Call of Duty game drops about the same time?

It's a great bet, but I would be inclined to say that Reach doesn't sell 5 million copies week one.  The fight is finished already.

Edit:  Halo 3 did 3.8m week one, ODST did 2.2m (source: internet)

Considering these numbers, not sure it'll make 5 mil in a week.

I hope you win myself, though I wonder if the fact that Halo is science fiction and MW2 is modern day gives the latter more mass appeal. We'll just have to see!

Never got into or bought MW2 myself, but I'll definitely pick up Reach, so I'm helping your case haha.

Though, that said, maybe I should beat ODST first... It's still sitting in its wrapping.

This is one of the best bets ever, because it's pretty much 50-50.

I think it really comes down to how well-received the Beta is by the general public. If Bungie is able to captivate the casual crowd of players who normally spend all of their time playing MW2, then that will create 4 months (assuming the beta ends at the beginning of June and the full game launches in September) worth of positive word-of-mouth. Couple that with Microsoft's inevitable avalanche of advertising hype, and I think that 5 million copies in the first week is certainly obtainable.

I know! How the hell am I suppose to sleep around here...

Haha Yah, I know about the week one sales for those two. It's not the raw numbers, it's the attach rate I'm concerned with. 3.8 million out of the 12 million 360s that were out on the market at the time is a massive attach rate. Even if only half of that attach rate happens for Reach, it'll give me enough to win haha.

ODST I look at as more of an expansion. It was also a good way for them to spread the Beta and make money doing so. I think that anyone who bought ODST was probably a hardcore Halo fan, or just really curious. If that's the case, and 2 out of the 3 million people in the beta get it in the first week, I'll be well on my way.

I know that it's a stretch, but I have a strange feeling Reach is going to explode.

Well it should reinvigorate him that it's guaranteed we'll have another COD game come november. COD sells, people don't care who makes it, look at how well World at War fared. That'll take some money away from Reach, for sure.

MW2 had the benefit of coming out like two years after COD4, and the hype around it was still there. Halo 3 came out 3 years ago (and ODST was basically an expansion), and people aren't quite as hyped on Halo as they used to be, as you can see from ODST's sales.

Personally I think MW2 will surpass, but it's entirely possible for Reach to take it too. It's a very close one.

@XII_Sniper: I am a bit worried about another COD game, but I think that there may be a bit of exhaustion that will save me hopefully :P I think Microsoft knows that the hype around the Halo name has dropped considerably since 3 came out, and so that's probably why they plan on spending unholy amounts of money on advertising. I personally think they should have skipped ODST and gone straight to Reach. It's a hard bet to make it's so 50/50 haha.

Besides Natal, there is nothing as big as Reach coming out this year. Microsoft respect that and will market the hell out of it.

Reach will be this year's MW2. BUT...

It will not beat MW2's sales. Multiple platforms>Single platform.

Week 1 sales? Possible.

It's week one sales on the 360, not the combined consoles sales.

Not even I'm that foolish to make a bet like that haha.

It really doesn't matter what the pedigree of the games are, all that is needed is enough money being pumped into marketing

Ah... that makes a bit more sense.

Then, I say, yea, you'll probably win. Microsoft ain't dumb, yo. You're probably gonna see Halo 3-level marketing or even more to regain momentum lost due to the 3 Call of Duty games helmed by COD4 after the release of the last major Halo game.

Its possible, this is the last Halo from Bungie and Microsoft is going to advertise the HELL out of it. MW2 sold big by banking on being MW1 but better. Reach is gonna do the same thing...it might get some flak from following ODST, but regardless, it is Halo, and regardless of quality, Halo sells (as much as I want to believe it sells for more than the name alone).

5 Million though.............it will be close....really close. I hope you win man, but its a hard bet.

It's not TOO far fetched to think that it MAY come close to MW2's all time sales...but week one...that's pretty much impossible.

Halo 3 has still sold more all time than MW2, even though Halo 3 has been out for longer. Honestly, anything after the first 6 months is so minimal it doesn't matter much.

Well, the guys on this week's bombcast weighed in on our little bet.

Unfortunately for me they were all very sure that I would lose hahahaha.

I can't blame them at all, it's a crazy bet but I still think for the reasons I mentioned in the original post that I have a chance yet.

That was the second time my question was answered on the bombcast and both times it was met with negativity lmao. Maybe next time I should ask them about food :P

They probably wouldn't have dismissed it so quickly if you had sent them those stats that you have in the OP. I'm guessing they had no idea that Halo 3 had a 30% attach rate.
