I know exactly what you mean. I really think that newer games are faster paced, intriguing  and and with some puzzles as well. I think that we are spoiled with these newer games. Thus  we have less patience with older ones. I picked up The old school Monkey Island and so far I've only got to the voodoo lady. I had tons of fun as a kid but its just not the same. I  would recommend Indigo Prophecy. I took about 8hours and it was on sale. Great adventure game and the makers of Heavy Rain.
