Castle CRASHers

Like most of you fine people out there, I downloaded the long-awaited, much anticipated XBox Live Arcade game Castle Crashers when I got home this evening.  I was yearning for some good old-fashioned 4-player co-op with some good friends.  After all, The Behemoth have been promoting the online aspect of this game as if it were the second coming of Christ Himself.  Nonetheless, after shelling out $15 and waiting patiently for the game to download, I sat back and prepared myself for a joyful night of co-op fun.

Or so I thought.

CRASH!!
CRASH!!
First game crashes on the player selection screen.  Second game crashes on the world map.  Third game crashes after the first cutscene.  Anyway, you catch my drift.  The damn game is broken, plain and simple.  You would've thought that, after making us wait this long, The Behemoth would've taken it's time to make sure there were no bugs at all in the game, that they would've made sure the one thing they so shamelessly promoted for Castle Crashers, it's online co-op, would work flawlessly.  I am so disgusted with The Behemoth right now, words cannot even begin to explain my disgust.  My longest online game so far?  3 minutes.  3 damn minutes.  Oh but wait, there's more!  Not only does the game crash repeatedly during online play, it also crashed on me during my single player experience.  To quote The Escapist: "Whooptie Fucking Doo!".

So, until the predictable patch is released, there will be no Castle Crashers for me.  I still cannot believe I paid $15 for a broken piece of garbage like this.  Bah, I'll just go back and play Civilization Revolution in the meantime.

Castle CRASHers indeed.

Stop Talkin' Crazy

I am really enjoying my time with Civilization Revolution.  When I bought the game last Friday, I never thought in a million years that it would hook me in like it has.  Friday, I went to bed around 2 AM.  Saturday, same thing.  Sunday, 12:30 AM.  Last night, midnight.  It's almost impossible for me to start a game and not finish it.  I keep telling myself "Just one more turn and I'll save the game".  One turn becomes 5, then 10, then 20, and so on.  Hell, I barely watched WWE Raw last night, which is my favorite show on TV, because I was playing the game, and I watch that show religiously every week.

What's funny about this is that I don't even like strategy games all that much.  There's just something about Civ Rev that keeps me coming back.  Maybe it's the user-friendly aspect of the game that has me hooked.  It's very easy to get into the game and just play a match with the civilization of your choice.  I've won all 4 types of victories on Chieftain (easiest) mode: Cultural, Economic, Technological and Domination, and have played with 7 of the civilizations.  I'll move onto the 2nd easiest skill level as soon as I get a victory with every civilization... hey, can't blame a guy for wanting achievements, eh?  Each win with a civilization earns you 15 points.  Need to bump up that gamerscore a bit.

Although the game is very well done and incredibly addicting, it does have it's share of flaws.  It bugs me that you have to go through every one of your active units on the map before a turn ends.  This makes the game longer than it should be sometimes, especially when you have a lot of ground, air and sea forces spread about the map.  The only way for the game to skip them is if you ask the unit to defend, but then another problem arises.  If you need said unit, you have to find it on the map, press the A button to activate it and go from there.  Another thing that bugs me is the advisors.  No matter which civilization you choose, you always get the same annoying advisors, dressed in the same clothes, all the time.  They also say the same thing over and over again, in Simlish, ad nauseam.  When you're close to earning a certain type of victory, they'll keep reminding you of this each and every damn turn.

Those are just small complaints for a game that is absolutely fantastic and absorbing.  Even if you're not a fan of RTS games, I suggest you check it out.

In other news, I'm getting Castle Crashers tomorrow, so if you guys are up for some co-op, let me know.  I'm down.  Also, I pimped out (somewhat) my profile here at Giant Bomb.  I wanted to put the widget for Last.fm there, but the damn thing wouldn't fit or would be all screwy, so I just went for the standard fare.  If any of you guys know how to get that damn thing in there without a hitch, let me know.

Last but not least, thank you for the comments on the video blog.  I'll be doing some more in the very near future.

Time to own another civilization.  Later!

I'm The Dude Disguised As A Dude Playin' Another Dude!

I just got home from seeing Tropic Thunder.  I was surprised to see that the movie is directed by Ben Stiller.  When I got home, I immediately checked on IMDB to see if he had directed other movies, and was surprised, once again, to see that he had directed Zoolander.  Nonetheless, the movie stars Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black and, surprisingly (again), Tom Cruise.

Very funny!
Very funny!

First off, let me say that it takes a really funny movie to have me busting out laughing.  Coincidentally, this is one of them.  Tropic Thunder is a hilarious movie with funny performances from all of it's stars, especially Robert Downey Jr.  His portrayal of Kirk Lazarus had me laughing so hard my ribs hurt.  Another thing I like from a movie is when there's guest appearances, and believe me, this movie has tons of movie stars in it.  From Tom Cruise, who is absolutely brilliant as Les Grossman, to Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alicia Silverstone, John Voight and Jason Bateman, amongst others.

I was very skeptic about this movie but, in the end, it turned out much better than I thought.  If you guys haven't already, go see this movie.  It's worth it.

Off-topic: I fixed my cam today, so expect a video blog in the very near future.

Revolutionary Impressions

Random stuff to talk about, so here goes.

- Posted my thoughts on the Force Unleashed demo over on EndSights.  Check them out and feel free to comment here or there.
- Went to Future Shop looking for Hitman: Blood Money.  It wasn't available, so I ended up buying Civilization Revolution.  Expect impressions soon.

Viva La Revolution!
Viva La Revolution!

- Going to see Tropic Thunder tomorrow night at the theater.
- Bought Rio and Girls on Film by Duran Duran on Rock Band.  They were one of my favorite bands growing up in the 80s.

That is all.  Have a great weekend!

So What Do I Think Of The Demo For The Force Unleashed?

"Denis will probably orgasm over it." - EightBitWarrior

So true Mike, so true.  I've been playing it for a good hour, 4 times through, and I'm not even tired of it.

Yum.
Yum.

I cannot wait to see what the retail game will be like.

Full impressions tomorrow.  For now, I need to go find some tissue.

I've been absent from here since Monday.  The reason for this is right here.  I really hope you guys read it, I've put a lot of work into writing it.  I hope to hear from you guys, either here or on EndSights, about the editorial.

Demo Man

Well, today was my first day back at work after my wonderful vacation and it was a really, really busy one.  Add to the fact that I slept really badly last night, for reasons that

Coming this Thursday!
Coming this Thursday!
are still unknown to me, and you have a destructible mixture for a bad day.  I am fucking tired right now, as I can barely keep my eyes open.  Gotta love sleepless nights.

You must be wondering what my blog title means.  No, I'm not becoming a demolitions expert.  I'm talking about two demos coming out this week on XBox Live Marketplace that have me buzzing: NHL 09 & The Force Unleashed.  I'm not certain about the specifics for both, but one thing's for sure, both of them are mine on day one, just like the retail game will be.  Should be a great weekend.

I'll conclude this short blog with a shameless plug of our website.  Seems like it's been a while since I've done a shameless plug, so here we go.  The brilliant Art Green secured an interview with the equally brilliant Jonathan Blow, the man behind Braid, for EndSights.  Follow this link and check it out.  Great job Arthur!

I'm going to bed.  Ah man, Raw is on tonight.  Guess I have to stay up for a bit.

I Love Countdowns

As I was browsing through the Interwebs last night, I thought I'd take a peek at one of my favorite websites, Rotten Tomatoes, to see if the mighty Dark Knight had finally been surpassed at the box office during the weekend and, to my mild surprise, it has.  Tropic Thunder, starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr, has taken it's place at the top of the box office.  I've been hearing great things about the movie and plan on seeing it soon.  But, as I was preparing to change sites, something caught my eye.

The Classic of Classics.
The Classic of Classics.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Rotten Tomatoes, let me fill you in on what the site is.  Sponsored by IGN, the site compiles reviews from renowned movie critics onto a scale called The Tomatometer.  The higher the meter, the better the movie is.  Critics also sound off with their own mini reviews, and even the reader can rate movies and post reviews of their own.  Now, I know some of you out there will say that they'd rather trust their own instincts instead of a critic's assessment of the movie, and I don't blame you, but I've found myself agreeing with most of the scores given on the site.

Anyhow, I was interested by this countdown section they have on Rotten Tomatoes where they list the best movies in different genres.  For example, they compile the 100 Best Reviewed Sci-Fi movies of all time (my favorite genre), the 50 Best Reviewed TV Adaptations of all time, and so on.  There's also a very interesting countdown where they take every Best Picture Oscar winner and list them according to their reviews.  The positioning of some of the movies in those countdowns had me dumbfounded but, for the most part, it's what I expected.
Nobody can forget this face.
Nobody can forget this face.

Another interesting section is The Battle Of The Blockbusters.  The first list contains the biggest moneymakers of all time, the second contains the biggest ticket sellers, while the third compares the Tomatometers from each list.  I was shocked to see that Titanic had made over $600 million.  I mean, the movie was good and all, but $600 million?!  As for Gone With The Wind, the leader in the 2nd column, after adjusting it's ticket sales to today's prices, it grossed over $1.37 billion!!  One thing's for sure, it's a much better movie than Titanic can ever hope to be.  I'm also glad to see that Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is 2nd in both countdowns.

I hope you enjoyed this blog and I'd like to hear what you think about those lists.  On a side note, I'm going back to work tomorrow.  Vacation's over.  Ugh.

You Can Find Me In Da Pub

With a plethora of interesting XBox Live Arcade games coming out recently, one would be hard pressed to choose between them. In my case, I downloaded all of them while paying a damn fortune in Marketplace points, and tried them out. Surprisingly, the game I'm enjoying the most may not be the one you'd think.

Welcome To The Pub.
Welcome To The Pub.
My game of choice right now is Fable II Pub Games. Yes, you read that right. I downloaded this game last night, after hearing good things about it from friends, and I do not regret my purchase one bit. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this tie-in to the upcoming Peter Molyneux RPG, but damn... I can't stop playing! What's really odd is that I hate gambling in real life and in most games of the genre. Of course, you won't find

any Poker or Blackjack tables here. However, some of the games resemble some real-life casino games, but their differences are enough to make me love this game.

I'm not even sure if I'll be getting Fable II yet, but I'm enjoying this game more than Braid, which I should've never have bought since I'm not a fan of platformers, and Bionic Commando, which I just cannot get into for unknown reasons. Contrary to Geometry Wars 2, a game which I adore even though I suck at it, Braid and BioCom just leave me cold.

Funny how such an unexpected game can turn things around, isn't it?

Maybe... maybe not.
Maybe... maybe not.

In conclusion, I leave you with this video.  Scott Weiland is one of my favorite front men, alongside Bono and Axl Rose, and this video proves it.  It's an acoustic version of Plush by Stone Temple Pilots.  Just listen to the man's voice.  Amazing.
