2017 Game of the Year

Would like to play:

A Hat in Time

Best old game: Persona 4 Golden

With the impending release of its sequel, I figured it was finally time to check out the much loved Persona 4 for myself. Over 100 hours later, I felt sad to see it end. With a very charming cast of characters and a fun, twisty story, it definitely lives up to the expectations.

2017's 2016 Game of the Year: Overwatch

A week before Overwatch released, I had almost zero interest in it or team based shooters in general. Well over a year later, I'm still playing on a semi regular basis. The game just feels so good to play and the developers have a done a solid job of keeping it fresh with seasonal events and new content.

Most charming character: Kat (Gravity Rush 2)

Gravity Rush 2 suffers from some serious repetitive mission design. I'm not sure I would have spent more than 10 or so hours with the game were it not for the incredibly charming main character, Kat. Spurred on by Kat's infectious personality, I ended up completing almost every mission in the game.

Best use of The Witcher 3 to revitalize a franchise: Assassin's Creed Origins

Assassin's Creed had fallen into some major franchise fatigue, so what better way to turn things around than to take a bunch of cues from one of the greatest open world RPG's ever made? And it worked!

Best nostalgia trip: Super Mario Odyssey (the 2D sections)

I continue to have issues with the camera in 3D Mario games, but thankfully that is not a problem in the incredibly well designed and varied 2D sections of Odyssey. The style and music of each section takes me back every time to good old classic 2D Mario.

2017 the year that keeps on giving: Evil Within 2, Golf Story

Years later I'm still finding really good games from 2017 that I didn't get a chance to play when they released. One might say this was the best year for video games ever...

List items

  • Truly a modern beat'em up/brawler done right. Plenty of goofy Japanese shenanigans mixed in with a surprisingly good, dramatic story. A simple combat system with depth for players who want to spend the time to learn it. Excellent voice acting, animation, and a great soundtrack. My first taste of the Yakuza series left me really looking forward to playing more of it.

  • It gets off to a slow start thanks to the unnecessarily restrictive stamina system, but this is one of the best open world adventure games ever made. The range of environments, unique systems, and constant new discoveries to be made even many hours into the game are second to none.

  • Platinum Games sure can make a great feeling 3rd person action game. Wait...this is way more that just an action game. Twists and turns, many endings, multiple main characters, messing with save game data and things you just can't experience properly outside of a video game environment. Maybe the best soundtrack of the year as well.

  • One of the most visually stunning video games ever created. The 30's cartoon style is executed perfectly from the art and animation to the music and sound effects. High difficulty lead to many fist pumping moments after finally defeating a boss.

  • Samurai Souls with a Diablo-like loot drip. The combat feels fantastic and the 1600's Japan setting is far more interesting than anything from the Souls series. Features a giant toad boss who smokes a pipe while attacking with a huge spear...it's a great game!

  • A brilliant, polished Dark Souls inspired Metroidvania. Everything from the art and music to the controls and map design feels like it was done with meticulous effort. Some of the challenges/boss fights can get a bit difficult for my tastes, but most of the harder stuff is smartly made optional.

  • Robot dinosaurs! Another open world game complete with side quests and its own brand of towers to climb. What makes this one stand out is the excellent, thrilling combat. Fighting a Thunderjaw and Stormbird for the first time got my heart racing like few other games' boss battles could. Did I mention the enemies are robot dinosaurs!?

  • Nails the classic space sci-fi setting and story. Plays like something between Deus Ex and Bioshock. Has one of the best "oh shit" opening sequences I've ever played. What's not to like?

  • A drastic but much appreciated change in direction for the series. Going first person while still keeping some key Resident Evil staples intact payed off in a tight, creepy experience.

  • I'm not sure I like the cast as much as its predecessor, but Persona 5 makes a bunch of smart improvements to the dungeon design, combat and general quality of life aspects. It also oozes style with excellent art and music.
