Penny Arcade Episode 2 Verdict

Running, Running, Running!
Running, Running, Running!
Penny Arcade Episode 2 is the continuation of the adventure game series by the writers of the Penny Arcade comic and Hot Head games. Episode 1 was a mediocre Adventure/RPG hybrid. The majority of the game was spent finding random maguffins in order to advance the story. The combat has your cast of heroes taking turns defeating an array of foes in typical RPG fashion. Both of these parts put together are not very interesting but that’s not what I noticed about the game.

For me the game was less of a game and more of an interactive comic adventure featuring Gabe and Tycho from the comic. In these terms this game was a huge success. The unique humor of the web comic translates extremely well into videogame form. Any text in the game has been subject of Penny Arcade’s unique writing style and had me laughing out loud from time to time; Which is extremely rare for me. The other aspect that separates this game from others like it is the art style. It should come to no surprise to readers of the comic that the 2D cut scenes are just like those you would read on the site. The 3D environments are also impressive; While each area is unique and full of details, there are not too many areas. The few areas in this game become somewhat tiring after you have been forced to go through again and again for the sake of advancing the story.

This game does nothing to revolutionize RPG’s or bring back the adventure genre. So for those who are looking for groundbreaking game play mechanics, I’m sorry to say that there is none of that to be found in this game. However, this game does a superb job of channeling the unique style of Penny Arcade into video game form. If you are a fan of Penny Arcade then there is a lot to enjoy, however if you are not you might end up feeling like you didn’t get your moneys worth.

I would buy this if the first one had any lasting appeal. The first episode I paid $15 for a 6 hour game with no replay value. This episode is about the same length, same price, and same everything else. Therefore a waste of money to me. I guess it appeals to Penny Arcade fans more.

I loved the first one but there is too much coming out right now to even occupy any of my time with this. Maybe in Decemeber sometime.

For some reason I don't think those games look really fun.
