Three Houses is the only game I’ve played for almost the entire second half of 2019, and I still haven’t finished my first playthrough. I can safely say, however, that this is my game of the year. It’s refreshing to see developers have the nerve to include so much content that the majority of players won’t ever see. While Three Houses is a tactical RPG in which you ally with one of three soon-to-be warring nations and make moral and ethical decisions along the way, it is also, arguably more importantly, a teacher simulator. You can play favorites, training and spending time with certain students while neglecting others entirely. You can flirt with your students and fellow professors. You can slack off entirely and go fishing or gardening. You can murder your former students beloning to opposing nations in cold blood on the battlefield.

I am a simple man. I see Yakuza product, I consume. Yakuza 0 surprised me because I hadn’t expected the prequel in which you play as the comic relief character to end up being the best one in the series. Judgment similarly surprised me, as I hadn’t expected too much from the spin-off detective game. I should probably just trust Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at this point because Judgment is one of the best “Yakuza” games. The Dragon Engine was refined in Yakuza Kiwami 2 after the incredibly janky Yakuza 6. But with Judgment, RGG Studio have really hit their stride with the engine, and it’s hard to believe this game came out only two years after 6.

Playing the original CTR as a kid twenty years ago ruined me on kart racers. Not a single one has scratched that itch the way CTR did, including Mario Kart (which I contend to be bullshit that punishes you for being good at it). Not only is it the best in the genre, it may even be the best Crash game. Although I was rusty when first starting Nitro-Fueled, muscle memory kicked in, and I was soon power sliding like it was 1999 again. This is a real man’s kart racer.

I’d thought that Doom (2016) was peak video game, but I may have been wrong. You can dual wield motorcycles chainsaws in DMC5.
