Best of 2011

  • 2011 Was the year of the sequel, but this one really takes the 'cake'. The first Portal was just about the perfect game, with a mix of innovative puzzles that keep adding new things to learn and hilarious writing. Portal 2 adds more to every aspect of the last game, the game is two times as long, has three times the comedic talent and the levels are more creative with so many different puzzle elements, that by the end I forgot that I could just make a portal to get to the other side of a chasm.

Also there is a two-player coop campaign, which was just about the most fun I ever had playing a videogame together with a friend.

  • These games are now a few years old, but still two of the most amazing, emotionally impactful games ever. Add a higher resolution and better framerate and this collection becomes my number two 'game' of 2011.

  • Again a sequel to a game I played and finished quite a few times. This game adds to the smooth gameplay and atmosphere of the first Dead Space and delivers a survival horror game that never felt frustrating, but did at times feel extremely creepy. Goddamn that needle to the eye...

  • Even though the story seems to be set around whatever crazy set-pieces Naugty Dog could create and the still slightly repetitive gameplay, this game goes above and beyond what Uncharted 2 did, which I did not think would be possible.

  • Arkham City refines the systems set in place in Arhham Asylum and adds every villain I could think of, and more, to the mix, together with a big open world. I finished the main story, and still there is so much to do that I feel I barely got halfway through.

  • Every time I watch Mad Men and see Aaron Staton, I think: "Hey, that's officer Phelps!", which shows that the new facial animation tech Team Bondi developed works like a charm. Besides hanging out around the uncanny valley, L.A. Noire delivers a modern adventure game with a fantastic atmosphere. Fuck the ending, though...

  • Ghost Trick is very similar to the Ace Attorney series when it comes to story, but the gameplay and graphics are quite different, for the better.

  • Resident Evil 4 and Vanquish are two games with some of the best gameplay you can find and while I really dug the humor of No More Heroes, the gameplay left a lot to be desired. So with the main men of those games at the helm of Shadows of the Damned, combined with the musical stylings of Akira Yamaola (Silent Hill), you can be sure there would finally be a playable game with Suda51's humor. And they delivered, right down to Garcia Fucking Hotspur's squeaky leather pants.

  • Rez is probably the game I finished most often, and not just because it's so short; the awesome music and crazy graphics make you forget how simple the gameplay is. This spiritual successor did have a slightly lesser impact, but it some levels did give a very similar vibe.

  • I barely started playing this and already it's immersed me into the story unlike any other MMO ever could. My goody-two-shoes Sith wizard is not even level 20, but she already got to kill a Darth, spoke to the ghost of her great great great grandfather and flew my spaceship around the galaxy to find ancient treasure, all while hanging out with my old friends from WoW.
