Yup. It's great, partly because of how dynamic everything unfolds for each player. I made a blog about this, and it was disheartening to see how many people told me that it's "not possible" when we already have games like CK2 doing it.

@LD50: and that mod is amazing, it's still in the beta stages, but it's really good, plus with the character creator dlc I was able to make my own ASOIAF character.

I'm just going to dump this link here, in case some new players get interested in how to play CK2. It's the best video-tutorial I've ever seen for a Paradox game so far.

That sounds pretty awesome, I'm in. I see they have a Song of Fire and Ice mod.

@gaminghooligan: Cool. I'll keep that in mind, but I couldn't even get past the interface. It's not as though I didn't know what I was doing. I was desperately trying to do anything, but got no feedback whatsoever. Oh well. I guess that's what tutorials are for. I always try to chance it first.

@mandude: lol yea nothing more depressing than being done in by your kid only to have to start playing as him half the time or becoming one of his brothers. It's one of those games that I learned by using cheats and toying around until I got all the mechanics down. Now I play legit and have a blast but I think playing in a sandbox state helps you learn the mechanics and pick up on the type of characters you want to raise and play as.

Loaded this game up once, and couldn't understand it. But you're really making me want to resume my Earlship of Dublin as Brian Ua Sirideain and conquer the world!

I probably shouldn't name my character after myself, though, since I'll take it really personal when my son murders me (like everyone is saying he eventually will).

@MikeGosot: not sure on the exact length it stretches from William the Conqueror taking england to the end of the Third Crusade. I know I have never finished a full game as my family bloodline tends too stretch thin or I get betrayed or conquered. Most lives I've played is 6, the last being my only heir, an 18 year old sick with the plague and possessed by Satan. He was quickly disposed of by his bastard brother Orthello.

@casperhertzog: I know! Plus the dlc actually feels like it adds a whole new sub-game with all the cultural stuff like visiting Mecca and being able to marry multiple spouses and celebrate Ramadan

its amazing how much the randomly generated characters down the line (who have no real way of speaking and can only communicate to you through their actions) have brought out emotions/opinions in me ie: fuck this duke he is a backstabbing jerk, its a shame his dad is such a cool guy or i would have him killed.

Recently got my hands on crusader kings 2 for the pc. The grand strategy game appealed to the obsessive in me and after watching the QL here on GB I grabbed the game off steam with the Sword of Islam dlc. I began as the duke of a small section of Ireland and married a young woman from my noble court. She was gifted with the charitable and kind traits, but within a few months of our marriage found out she was a leper. My duke was stricken with grief when she passed later the same year. I married an older woman this time, the princess of Bohemia. She was a spymaster in the making, and gave birth to many of my character's children, most important his heir Colin macShea Patrick. My marshal and I rode out in the summer of my 20th year in power, and as my son and heir celebrated his birthday my character was killed in an assault, his marshal taking a serious wound defending him. The attack was planned and carried out by my oldest son and heir, I know because I became him after my original character died. That was a mere 20 years in a game that goes throughout the crusades. The game is a must play if you like strategy, and all though the game has a rough learning curve, the payoff is worth all the effort.
