Top 10 Favorite Video Games of All Time

My favorite video games of all time in order, 10 being my most favorite.
These are games I could go back to time after time, and still enjoy. They also all have a sort of personal, or nostalgic value to them, while still being great games that stand the test of time.

List items

  • One of the great games for the original Sega Genesis, this is by far my favorite side-scrolling beat-em-up. It has crazy enemies like ninja turtles, dominatrixs, and Ahnold clones. This game is also really, really hard. Not using a continue during a run-through is pretty near impossible, and when you reach the two crazy b*tches at the end of Stage 5, you'll be begging for mercy and offering THEM sandwiches. But the tight gameplay and cool enemies aren't the best thing about the game. That honor would go to the soundtrack, which consists of some of the hippest bit-music you'll ever hear. Seriously, even if you don't want to play the game, you'll want to hear it's mad phat beats.

  • I first got this game in middle school. My parents bought it for me ironically from the school book store catalog (lawl!). The Roller Coaster Tycoon series is an amazing simulation game that is as much as your imagination and creativity can make it. The roller coaster building tool is very easy to get the hang of, and is very rewarding to see high test-ride results and guests flocking to it in masses. The game remained fun even through Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which switched to 3D graphics, though a technically buggy start definitely hindered the fun. While not as deep and micromanaging as the SimCity games, RollerCoaster Tycoon always felt more active and a bigger creative outlet. And even when you didn't feel like making your park spiffy and pretty, and getting loads of guests, you still could get quite a bit of fun out of the game. This could be done by picking up guests (and costumed entertainers) and dropping them in water, building a roller coaster that drove straight into the ground, or cutting off pathway that would trap hundreds of guests in a blurry horde. Inappropriate ride names were fun too.

  • One of the greatest RPGs of all time, this game made the genre more approachable and appealed to a more diverse audience then the Final Fantasy series (a series I never got into). The game had great gameplay, awesome music (like, really awesome), and a lengthy story. But the best part were the characters (friends and foes alike) and ridiculously hilarious narrative. Unfortunately due to licensing issues, most of the more memorable characters such as Geno never made it into a future Mario game. Super Mario RPG had its share of weird little secrets too, and unfortunately after obtaining the super hidden Lazy Shell, the difficulty of the game went way down. In some playthroughs, I purposely avoided getting the Lazy Shell just so I could still be somewhat challenged.
