Amazing piece of content. The insight about reviews back in the day with the perspective now and the internal battles are so damn interesting. Would gladly listen to a part 2 of this.
Something you may have heard/will probably hear from other fans but bears repeating, though, is that if you watch the DBZ movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection F you can literally skip to Episode 28 of Super. Super retells those movies in the first 27 episodes, and it doesn't retell them particularly well. Due to poor pre-planning, that stretch has below-average animation and the episodes are absolutely bloated to hell. I highly recommend that you just watch the film versions (which also have great dubs!) and skip ahead.
Gonna put myself in this camp! Would highly recommend not going straight into Super and checking out the two films Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' that came out first. (Not that y'all need people barking at you telling you what to do!)
Battle of Gods did come first, and is such a special piece of work, since Toriyama himself took the reigns to really make his idea of a Dragon Ball Z film. It was the first steps in telling a story in a post-DBZ world, and it balances out the combat with all the great character moments that makes Dragon Ball charming and weird.
Aaaand Super completely ruins the film, stretch out to 14 REAL budget thin episodes to recap it. Then they do the same to Resurrection 'F', another 90 minute film spread into 300+. The stories were fresh and new, and they found a way to make them feel like a prolonged re-run.
Anyway, that's my suggestion! Thanks for even watching Kai at all. Really enjoy the podcast!
Moreover he sucks in the same exact way for the whole of these five episodes, which makes it especially tiring.
Vegeta's overconfidence in the Cell saga allowing Perfect Cell to form, isn't even really the same. His pride makes him fuck up, then he gets wrecked and realizes the gravity of the situation. Gotenks, who had dozens of episodes of build up, aggressively pushes the envelope in such a needless way, way more often, and way more obnoxiously.
I also agree that Gohan coming to take this would be a naturally more appropriate closing arc. But I'm preeeeeeetty happy with how it all goes down too.
