"I've recently played through Halo 1 for my first time, and I must say that I'm impressed with how great the controls and storytelling are handled. However, what the f is up with that level design? It's seriously some of the worst I've ever seen. It's impressive to have your levels look random-generated when they aren't. "

It's not that big of a deal for me, the levels are copy and paste but it doesn't kill the gameplay just the atmosphere. F.E.A.R. had the same issue too but the game was fun to play due to its deep combat model and sophisticated A.I.  Remember children: Gameplay > level design "
It's obvious gameplay > level design, but in Halo's case I would actually say that the level design is hindering the gameplay experience. When I'm in doubt if I'm moving forward or backtracking, it's no good, and even though the shooting is quite satisfying in the game, everything get's repetitive at some point.  Don't think I'm bashing the game; I actually enjoyed playing through it, which is some feat for a 8 year old FPS. "
What would you score the game then? "
Back then I would probably had given it 5 stars, but by today's standards it doesn't hold up very well. Keep in mind I have no nostalgic value attached to the game. "

That means you disagree with my OP.

"I dunno about the deserving praise and hype bit. Personally, I think Halo is over praised and over hyped, but I do agree that Halo CE is the best in the series. Halo 2 sucked and while Halo 3 was better than Halo 2 it still doesn't hold a candle to Halo CE. Also, I agree with the previous poster who said that Halo's 2+3 seemed watered down. "

Halo 2 didn't "suck" it was fine but rushed and was made in nine months.

Halo CE has a 97 on metacritic, what do you think should be the average rating for Halo at meta?

" @gordoa: Halo is a much, much better game than Goldeneye. But the fact is that Goldeneye came out 4 years earlier, and was the first successful console shooter. Halo is just 'another' successful console (and PC) shooter. I agree with Kasavin that the game is up there with the great first-person-shooters, but it doesn't have the landmark status that Doom or Half-Life have. What is Halo's contribution to games history, other than being a polished entertainment product? "

Regenerating shield, saved the Xbox, and dual analog controlsthat worked unlike other console FPS games before it. *cough*TimeSplitters*cough*Red Faction*cough*

Who agrees that Halo Combat Evolved is the only Halo game that truly deserves its praise and hype? It let alone saved the Xbox and proved that console FPS can control just as well as PC FPS.Well I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and say Halo 2 & 3 are crap, they're solid especially in the online multiplayer component. Halo 2 was fine but it seemed rushed, unpolished, and very unbalanced considering it was made in nine or ten months. Halo 3 was much better but still couldn't hold a candle to CE's story and single-player.         "
wasnt it made for 3 years, i think i remember they announced it in 2001 no? "
They created a demo of the engine they were going to use then Bungie slacked off until Microsoft told them that the engine they were going to create Halo 2 with was too powerful for the Xbox, so they screwed up and had dateline to create the game in nine or ten months. "
oh really? I never knew this... good to know... but i played a lot of Halo 2... split screen, but halo 3 was pretty weak imo... like it was watered down. if bungie knows how to make something right its hype.. and thats it. "
Halo 3 was at least better than Halo 2 in every way.

But in the end:

Halo CE > Halo 3 > Halo 2

"For originality Halo definitely deserves the most praise. Although FPS veterans might well argue that there wasn't really that much that was blindingly new about it. And Goldeneye was obviously the game that broke the genre on consoles.  I personally think that Halo is over-praised full stop. The games are obviously excellent entertainment products. But they don't offer anything that demands classic status. "
Greg Kasavin disapporves.
