For some reason, I tend to enjoy 99% of games that I play. And I play alot of games. Does that mean I'm easy to please? I guess so. I seem to be able to find some level of enjoyment with every game.
The older I get, the more I realize that I can handle bad stories in games. Whenever a critic complains about "bad" story, I almost always find myself saying,"meh, it wasn't that bad was it?" I guess the prime examples I can think of off the top of my head would be bioshock infinite, farcry 5, Halo 5....the list goes on. Maybe that's because I've come to expect mediocre storytelling in games?
For me, my enjoyment comes from mostly the "feel" of the game. The way it controls and plays in my hands. It's weird to put such an emphasis on some non tangible idea. State of decay? I loved the premise, the mechanics, the B tier jank. I hate how it felt, which almost entirely ruins a game for me. The same goes for FORTNITE, Resistance, assasins creed....etc. I can tell they're fantastic games, but the "feel" of the controls and gameplay are just not for me. And the problem lies there for me. How can you tell what the "feel" of the game is going to be without playing it? You can't. And I waste 100s of dollars a year on games that I will never play again, but I tell myself that I'll get back to them eventually when I have time. But you know what? more games keep coming out. Faster and faster. More production, more money and more niche games, catered to specific tastes. It's a vicious cycle. And it's hard to break free when it's such a passionate hobby for me.
We live in a day and age, with so much media coverage of video games, that really we shouldn't be thinking a game is one thing, and then be shocked or mad that it's another. A great example is sea of thieves. We all knew what this game would be. We all watched the beta videos and coverage. Watch the coverage, and don't be "fooled" by the marketing talk. Another issue, is that we listen to videos/podcasts/streams that "build the hype". I love the giantbombcast, and I'll listen to it for as long as it runs, but I can't help but think that these guys influence my anticipation of games that I wouldn't normally buy. Several times during the year I get bombarded by marketing making me feel like I'll be missing out on the latest/greatest game, when I know deep down I don't even really like the genre. But I buy the game, play it for a few hours, and never touch it again. fml, how do I stop that cycle?
that was a tangent I didn't expect to go on.
All of you guys saying, that these AAA games are HORRIBLE and BORING, do you honestly think that? Can you not take a step back from your rash opinion and think that it's the genre or type of game that you're not interested in and not that the game is garbage?
