Blazblue, Why am i still unimpressed?.....

I just got my import copy of Blazblue in the post today (ps3) and my first impressions have been hugely mixed. I went through the arcade to begin with choosing V13 to begin with and finding her absolutely weird to control and pretty much lost my first match to the computer. "ok" i thought , I'll try someone else... I chose poorly!
Carl is just not the kind of character you want to pick when first starting this game. I won one matcha nd then got beated over and over in the next, so i decided on taokaka(?) the cat girl. I had seen a lot of matches online with her and knew she was a very jabby-quick character which is the kind I like.  My impression of the game changed drastically at that point as i start doing 20-30  hit combos with  a combination of tested fighting game mechanics and button mashing.
I got through to hakumen and started getting a little angry at his stupidly powerful ultra's or whatever theyre called but I finally overcame him (in hindsight I really should have trained a bit and looked in the manual to see how to do her moves and how to defend myself better.) but then came the absolute cheapness of V13 oh my god one of the most hideously turtley, defensive, spammy final bosses I have ever encountered but once again in hindsight she is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy more tolerable and beatable than seth in SFIV.

*sigh of relief*

and then I did the wrong thing, I know it was wrong. Even as I type this I know exactly the mistake i made....I turned to someone and said

"I'm gonna fight someone online"

My first fight....I chose tao....i knew her....they chose bang.

I destroyed them even though they were level 5..... OH YEAH I IS THE AWESOMESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!

make mental note to self....premature celebration will bring disappointment!... the next few matches i found myself being destroyed by ragna's and noels spamming one of two moves at me...AWE to the SOME!... "choose similar skill" lvl 43, 46,35,25...etc OH MY GOD!... there is nothing  like terrible match-ups like this to make you never want to return to an online game of this nature, I am pretty tolerant and willing to go through the pain of trying to get better but many will be instantly turned off by a matching system that does that.

my first impression is that this game seems pretty unbalanced and I have absolutely no evidence to back that up and I'll only know for sure with time . The spamming and insults and my first psn messages  I have gained in XBL kind of way have been disgusting, Everyone likes to say taht ps3 owners are a more mature crowd.... evidence today suggests theyre just the same as the ones playing the 360.
ad my final and biggest complaint whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyy doooooooooooooooooooooeeeeeeeesssssssssss iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttttttt taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeeeee sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo looooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg tooooooooooooooooo cooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeecccccccccccctttttttttttttt toooooooooooooooooo ttttttttttttttthhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeee sssssssssssseeeerrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrssssssssss aaaaaaaaaaaffffffffteeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrr aaaaaaaaaaa maaaaaaaaaattttttttttttttttttccccccccchhhhhhhh????????? (why does it take so long to connect to the servers after a match)

it has taken (and I have timed it) up to 4 minutes  before the game decides to save and let me search for a new fight with absolutely no way of skipping it, I have had about 50 matches and about 10 disconnects , huge lag which may be because its only out in the US and Japan.... so, yeah not the best of first impressions.
and I paid £50 for the damn thing and absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the art and the music and its general atmosphere (that english language dub is abysmal)  and all the game has really done is frustrate me, Im totally going to put the hours in over the next few weeks to see if I change my mind....I want this to be better than streetfighter so much ( I ADORE sfIV with all my heart), I kind of need it to replace  it for a while before fighting another member of my self-titled "trifecta of dumb" (ken-sagat-zangief) because I will probably go insane from that fucking cry of shofuckingryuken!

absolutely true.

Update.....

I have played the game pretty much constantly throughout the weekend with the intent of improving my game only to be crushed by  the huge effort needed to get any good.. and judging by the online at the minute and frequency of certain players Im gonna say this is going to be hardcore-only within the next couple of months and I'm not going to torture myself only to probably fail at being anything other than mediocre.

It was about 7.42 on friday the 14th july that it finally dawned upon me that Blazblue wasn't for me, and that absolutely crushes me. I love me my anime and I love me some fighting games so why does BB not click with me at all???  I cannot find that one character that feels right. with only really jin and taokaka having anything resembling a character I'd want to play i have had about 240 matches and won like 55 with about 10 of them being jin, noel, ragna corner spamming and im not really proud of that at all.
I have read numerous times about how balanced the game is  and that is just untrue, 100% untrue. like battle fantasia before it ( a better game in my opinion) , there is some huge issues  and most of them come from that D button. noels whole game revolves around it and its absolutely deadly in the hands of a beginner even. so all you end up with is a bunch of players in a russian roulette situation hammering d and c hoping they hit the random autocourse correcting sequence of buttons to make their opponent die (probably in a corner) Infact the whole game seems to revolve around rushing your opponent into the corner and often times youre pretty much helpless to do anything. I dont think Ive ever been caught in so many infinite/ stupidly high damaging loops before. Ragna and jin seem to have such quick recovery times that you might as well not even bother blocking..and often blocking low willl get you punished that extra bit more.. unbalanced distribution of specials is also a problem if you ask me.. not only can jin  fireball (sword)  he can air fireball...multi air fireball.... freeze his opponents.... fly across the screen at high speed high or low throw better than most characters and do an up to 11 hit super slash move. Now I know akuma can pretty much do the same but he was balanced out by some pretty shitty  stamina in recent sf games... jin is not. The pressure seems to just be constant and never in a fair way. spamming in this game is actually rewarded.. spamming in sf will often net you a lose. Here  eventually their defense is going to break. I have won  a bunch of my wins by just trapping people in the corner using sac spirit 2 and just not letting up with it. theres just so many things I am not fond of hakunen's idiotically powered c-slash, V13, arakune and rachels ability to just spam the screen with so much shit that eventually youre gonna win the game really needed to replace the stupid and uneeded barrier bar with some kind of limit on the abount of times  that drive button should be allowed.

I know I'm going to get shit for all of this. I want so much to love this game, so, so, so much and it absolutely crushes me that it feels so wrong for me, I put in so much effort trying to perfect tao only to keep losing because of her unfair start-up times on her best  moves coupled with reaaaaaally low stamina.... you have no fucking chance against a ragna or a hakunen with any level of skill.... and there are a  lot of ragnas and hakunens online. I'm not bad at games , and rarely a sore loser and I never quit  (still have a 0% disconnect rating in sfIV after over 4000 matches) but this game just makes me fail over and over and over and over and over and I just find myself getting angry and frustrated and completely unsure of why I keep losing despite watching the disk and numerous online videos coupled with extensive forum research...I have no idea how I got to level 26 online because I have had level 1's wipe the floor with me. It just seems like some kind of law of averages that I would win a match here of there that I didnt feel was scraped by. I understand the game and its mechanics so why  am I never comfortable with it.  I had some really shitty beginnings with SFIV but even after a couple of days I felt like I was improving yet with BB  I get a decent win on a round and I still feel like I'm doing something wrong.

maybe theres just that one tiny nuance i'm missing (and impretty sure if i haven't found it by the end of the week I will be done with this game)

or maybe it's a  character comfort issue

or possibly its just like the taste of peas...it doesn't matter how much I taste them over the years my tastebuds will never accept it.

I seriously dont think I have ever been this depressed over a videogame before and i know thats pretty lame... at least I played it before most europeans though....

I never do quick match in ranked, I always do custom and physically pick my opponent.  Also, it sounds you never played Guilty Gear which is why you're so dissatisfied so far, this game is the spiritual successor to GG and borrows a lot of mechanics from it and adds on them.  Also, its not like Street Fighter or any other fighting game you've ever played.  Im sorry to hear about your disconnects though.  Be sure to read the incomplete games in the profile and if someone does it too much their profile goes red.  I have only had 2 disconnects in my whole 200+ ranked career and 30+ player match career - if you do proper research prior to the fight you'll avoid the bad crowd.  Finally, apparently the PS3 has the laggier version of the two and you're waiting on a patch for the lag or something...so hopefully that comes for you soon.

Has the patch come out for the PS3 version of the game yet?  Anyways, you should try using Ragna.  He is very easy to pick up and play.

I have played guilty gear... but only really against the ai , so i guess that doesn't count, I always knew the game wasn't like streetfighter . I  just wasn't ready for such a high volume of people that could destroy me with one move regardless of whether i defended myself or not

@marioncobretti: The people online are very good - I have been destroyed by every character online, even Carl.  Yes, Carl.  That's what makes this game so good because every character can destroy any other character.  My first few games I got destroyed too but you learn how to block and learn when to do your barrier bursts at the right time, how and when to rapid cancel.  A lot of times, depending on your oponent of course there's exceptions, if you flurry your opponent at the begining they will be on the defensive for the rest of the match not knowing what to do.  Then they'll negative warning themselves and you go in and finish them off for the double damage it provides.

What Ouroboros said.  Every character has its ups and downs.  You just have to play and practice to be very good.  If you come into this game from playing SFIV, then it's like learning to play fighting games with training wheels.  You just need t practice like myself.

@Ouroboros & JJOR64 . Thankyou for the advice, I was probably just a little too naive to think I could just  button mash a win here and there online, I'ts very easy to  come from being moderately good in something like sf and just assume youre going to do just as well in another game.. the same happened when I went from being incredibly good at cod4 only to be taught numerous lessons in rainbow 6. I really dont want to main ragna or jin though I think i have an irrational fear of the poster boy characters in fighting games regardless of them being the better characters... I guess im just a little masochistic and like to choose someone that seems to take more effort to win with (I main chun-li in sf and taht it always seems like i have to put a bunch more effort to win against certain characters)..and again thankyou.... i will take a deep breath and do some trainiing mode before idiotically venturing to ranked matches again

I was just like you.  I went into game being fairly good at SFIV and seen my self being trash.  I'm a person who has never picked up a Guilty Gear game before playing BlazBlue and I have learned a lot from this experience.  If you need some practice in BB, I recommend playing Arcade and Story Mode first before going online.  You could practice in Training with a CPU and get better that way.

@marioncobretti: If you want a challenge, be Carl - or Rachel.  Rachel is really complicated but she's absolutely deadly.  You should hopefully have the Limited Edition which comes with the training DVD - watch them, seriously.  They are invaluable material just seeing the combos and the basic "how to use a character" stuff.  Also, dont worry too much about ranked matches.  Do player matches, and make sure you join a room with other people so you can watch/spectate other matches.  You're only going to get better by playing people who as good as you or better.  So just play player matches and soak the experience in.  You'll be fine in no time.

Finally, if you want a button masher, be Noel.  :P  Shes pretty cheap and she'll get you some wins by just button mashing online but if you want to get good with her you'll need to learn to string combos together as mashing D will only get you so far online, especially ranked.

I've never taken more than like 10 seconds, if that, to get to the next match.  But definitely never 4 minutes.  Maybe it's because you're not in North America or Japan?

I find that the online component is really well done in this game.  It's a tie with the greatness that was Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.  Street Fighter IV's online component is shit, in contrast.

And yes, the PS3 has been patched up to the X360's version... finally :)

@Luke: Not to derail but I completely agree on the SF4 comment; lobbies and spectating matches was what we/they wanted and they snubbed them.  Also under no cicumstances, EVER, should you be allowed to change the terms of a ranked match.  I hated that 1 round, or 5 round, 30 second round bullshit online in RANKED SF4 games.  Oh yeah, and all the Kens.

Anyways, yeah - dont give up on Blazblue, it's very good.

@Luke:
I have played the game pretty much all day today and the match-lag seems to have gone excluding the kind of sync up stuff at the beginning of the match. I have had a few issues with moves just not working online despite being able to do them 100% offline.
The "connecting to server" message post match though has stayed and I cannot find anything on the internet about it (went to dustloop etcetc)
unfortunately because f the way you go back to a lobby in player matches it means I take so long that I always get kicked meaning player matches are unplayable and I have to stick to ranked which is harming my view of the game.. S it's either a connection issue despite the game running just fine during matches or some horrible UK thing.

I have started to get the hang of spammers though and started beating/having reaaaaaaaaaaally close matches against  noels and jins

I'm disappointed in Blazblue as well, for a lot of reasons.  Overall it just doesn't grab me.  I should have known better, because I was wary but when lots of 90% or higher reviews came out and tons of people on forums were raving about it, I thought it'd be different.  It turned out just like I expected :/

yes, Noel is one of the easiest to get good at. What I can tell that her DOWN + D has a high, mid & low hit, the only thing is that you most hit the other guy or his get a free hit at you.
Also Bang Shishigami is the shit.

FU-RIN-KA-ZAN, if the best super move.

It turned-out to be exactly as I was expecting too... just a tad better than what I played in the arcade, and it was.

What a great game!! :)

I like this game, and I am NOT hating on you when I say this, I promise you- but maybe this just isn't your game, ya know? It's hugely different from most 2d fighters to the point that I can absolutely see a lot of fighter fans being completely dissatisfied with it.

I grew up on Street Fighter 2 on my genesis and I loved Samurai Showdown. Then I went on to Marvel vs. Capcom and Capcom Vs. Snk, and then after that I thought I was done. Then last year I picked up Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core out of complete curiousity. It totally blew me away.

And now BlazBlue has completely stolen my heart.

This game is still has very good, balanced match-ups. Pretty much any character can beat any other character (unless its like Tager vs. V-13, good luck with that)

and i heard V-13 is gonna get a nerf.

The reason it may seem unbalanced to you is because of the fact that the characters are different from each other, whereas in Street Fighter alot of the Characters are generally the same.

Also you say  "Spamming is rewarded in this, unlike SF"
Aha, no, That's why after around 700 matches in SFIV I just stopped playing for a long time. All I ever fight are spamming shotos, who turtle in a corner, in this game, corners will destroy you.

@Gahzoo:
So assume im playing sf and i decide to just use the  focus attack am I ever likely to win?... no, never
but in blazblue I can hammer one button assuming the other player isnt defending themselves...and do such a damaging move that 1/3... 1/2 of their life has gone.
those match ups only really count with a certain level of proficiency and skill. I main chun-li in sf but ive beaten a fuckton of sagats...some very good, and  Im pretty certain  sagat has a much bigger advantage... so match up stats dont really count  a tiny bit like tier lists dont when it comes to a more casual approach....like online gaming.

spamming IS rewarded, Im fully aware of the "playing to win" theory and that nothing is cheap but this game is just full of "cheapness" (and i am fine with that in fighting games) So much in fact that the game  encourages it and that to ME isn't fun. No amount of arguement can change my mind on that. as I pointed out above noels whole  strategy is based on two moves regardless of whether youre fucking awesome at the game or an absolute beginner... at least in sf you need to know how to do a shoryuken regardless of its simplicity and its easy to block... jins ice car on the other hand isnt as easy to due to the speed of the game.

now the thing about the shoto's... yeah  theyre all the same at a glance but being awesome with ken doesnt guarantee that youre awesome with sakura or dan... maybe even akuma. It certainly helps but in no way are those characters the same..also sf has 25 characters and bb 12...im pretty certain theres 12 individual styles away from the shoto crowd (I have no issue with a small roster)

anyways I have accepted the game just isn't for me.....I get absolutely no joy from it despite wanting to....very much so.  I thought about pleaing for help and getting someone to run me through where I was going wrong but in the end I know it will be futile. I'm never going to enjoy it like others do...blah blah...and these lengthy  replies I keep typing are not helping matters....

it seems to be my gaming equivalent of the one that got away.

Yeah, if you don't like it you don't need to force yourself to like it or to get others to convince you to like it.

you can hammer your drives and beat a bunch of noobs but you're crazy if you think shit like that works against advanced players. They'll lay out a bunch of different combo combinations that'll keep you guessing and work mind-games like utilizing cross-overs. Spamming your D won't get you far when a competent player figures you out and starts finding openings to send you into some painful combos.

So if  you actually want this game to feel rewarding to you, you'll have to stop stupid tactics like spamming high priority attacks and learn how pull off actual combos that involve more combinations than a couple button presses. Only then will you see the greatness that is Blazblue.

@GnaTSoL:
I'm done with the game now, and if you had read my post... you would have realized I mentioned I totally understood the mechanics, I could even do some very high hit combos, one of the biggest problems comes down to something as tiny as lag... I could/can never find a decent connection with anyone and there was such noticeable lag between my input and the move.. so regardless of whether I could do a 20+ hit combo with lichi offline it still meant I was failing to do the simplest  of moves online.

also AS I WROTE IN MY POST i mentioned that I  couldnt find that one single fighter that clicked with me.... I accepted it,  there was  no need for your comment.  I have made it pretty clear i gained SOME of my wins from spamming.... but the majority of my Tao wins weren't..... its pretty hard to spam with her anyways.

Lag? wtf? This game by FAR has best netcode among fighting games I own (SCIV, SFIV, Tekken DR)

Even against Japanese players I had smooth matches and I live in NY, not Cali.

Where do you live to have such terrible connection?

I can understand the part about not fitting your taste or whatever, but complaining about connection for me it's really hard to believe. I main Litchi as well and I can pull of her combos without any problems. None what so ever (well not now because I just bought arcade stick)

I live in the UK..... it is NOT my connection, KZ2 and resistance etc  run fine. The game isn't out in europe and I seem to only fight japanese people and Ive found I always have problems with connections  to them even in games like SFIV on my 360.
The game also isn't out in europe and input lag is definately noticeable, I have also pointed out a few times about my "connecting to server" issue, which seems to affect a very small amount of people playing the game.
It always amuses me that because one person doesn't have problems that  its just not possible that someone out there might., I do. and as I said before...i am not a sore loser, I'm not going to cry "lllllllaaaaaaaaaagggggggg" like a child when i lose a match.... it just happens... the internet isn't perfect last time i checked.

Well that's too bad. I'm guessing living in Europe is probably the problem since the game is not released there. I'm sure it won't be easy to find players live around you.

As for gameplay goes, I love this game. Is there lots of spammers in this game? yes that's true. Is it effective? Yes it's effective.

But like all other fighting game, there will always be spammers and it will have some degree of success. BlazBlue is no different. With little experiance and you can start dominating most spammers out there.

Also the balance is pretty good in this game. Aside from Nu, no one really sticks out. It's not perfect or near perfect like Virtua Fighter, but certainly not bad. The balance is much better than SFIV at the very least.

You guys are doing the same to us SFIV players, so it's kinda fair. As long as everyone keeps slamming the other game, it's a nice stalemate.

What the hell are you talking about?  Anyone can give up playing any game if they don't like it.  It's as simple as that, there's no "slamming" anyone's game.

This reminds me a bit of the guy in Street Fighter IV forum who basically said, "this won't teach me how to play/the training mode doesn't teach me like I want it to, therefore I don't like it."

I do admit, I'm a bit skeptical of this game. I'll probably wait until it drops to $30-$40 before I decide to invest in it.

@Napalm: You wont find it for 30-40 dollars - this game is going to be gone off the shelves if it isnt already and soon you'll only be able to find it on Ebay.

I just picked up a copy of the game today. I had mixed reactions on this game before I even purchased it but I figured I would give it a shot. I have not played it too much but I will say that I am not that impressed so far. Its okay but thats about it. Its just okay, definitely not worthy of all the praise that people have been giving it. Maybe I haven't found the hidden depth or whatever that a bunch of people seem to be experiencing but all I can say is that this is a rental at most. Glad I bought it used cause I definitely plan on returning it

@Napalm: No, you misunderstood me.  It'll never become 30-40 dollars unless you want it beat up and used because this game is so niche.  It's a game that after a run and a half they wont make anymore.  I'm not saying it's not 30-40 dollars now, it could be.  But what I'm saying is that if you're using a tactic to wait until the price drops to get it, it might be too late.

So they're magically going to stop making copies? With all the hype surrounding this game, you'd think more copies would be made hence, simply and demand.

No I've seen games like this, especially from Japan and from small and/or independent developers/publishers stop being sold after a season or so.  I'm not saying in the least that you wont be able to get this on the store shelves for awhile but what I am saying is this time next year this game wont be on shelves anymore, if before that.  And it's not that they dont want to sell more, sometimes they cant but most times the niche is so small to service another edition to retail.  If you ask anyone not in the know about fighting games about Blazblue they probably wouldn't know what you're talking about - it's a game that survives on word of mouth or past experience from the old Guilty Gear franchise.  It doesn't have a publisher like EA or Activision or another biggie backing them up..
