17 Reasons to Own A Wii

Games 1-6 are games that I have personally played and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a solid reason to own a Wii (first-hand recommendations).  Games 7-11 are games that I have not personally played but I have heard good things about them (second-hand recommendations).  Games 12-17 are games that have not yet been released but are highly anticipated (by me, at least) and are expected to do well upon release.  There are many other games available for the Wii that would provide even more reasons to own a Wii, but these are just the ones that I think most "gamers" and game journalists view most positively.  That's even before you account for the WiiWare and Virtual Console titles available on the Wii Shop Channel.

List items

  • This is pure fan service at it's best. I remember a bunch of people from my high school writing a story with all of the great Nintendo characters going on an adventure together and The Subspace Emissary feels like it could have been loosely based upon that.

  • My personal recommendation on this one would actually be to get the trilogy. But if you've already played the first two and don't want their Wii-made versions, you'll do well to finish it off with this conclusion to the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

  • I just have to say that the high-contrast black, white, and red color scheme is absolutely wonderful to behold. The red against the black & white is so cool to see. It's an admittedly short game with mediocre replay value, but it's crazy fun while it lasts.

  • I know that this one is also available on the PS2, but from what I've heard, it's much better on the Wii. Even GiantBomb's own Brad Shoemaker thinks it "uses the unique aspects of the Wii so well, you immediately feel like its quality would be lessened on a more traditional platform." Sounds to me like a good reason to own a Wii.

  • I know most people didn't much care for the first game in this series, but one look at Red Steel 2 and you'll just know that it's gonna be infinitely better than its predecessor.

  • If this is ever released, it looks like it could be the first truly mature game for the Wii. Some are writing this off as vaporware, but let's not forget that Alan Wake was announced in 2005, and it's just now approaching release. Don't be so quick to write it off, it could sneak up on us all.

  • No More Heroes may be getting ported to those "other" consoles, but Desperate Struggle is a Wii exclusive (for now, at least). If the first one is anything to go by, this one will be phenomenal.

  • The fine folks at Nintendo have said (and I think it is now generally understood) that this is going to be a sort of reboot for the Zelda series. It intends to change the tired Zelda formula into something we've never seen before. if it succeeds, it could rise to the level of Ocarina of Time.

  • I'm personally a bit skeptical of this game, but it's one I'm watching carefully, and I think every current and potential Wii-owner should do the same. Depending on what I see of this in the future, it could become one of my most anticipated games of 2010, or it could be removed from this list.
