Game of the Year! 2011 Special Hyper Combo Elite Edition

2011 was kind of a weird year. It started off extremely strong with Dead Space, Bulletstorm, Ghost Trick, You Don't Know Jack, Killzone 3, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Pokemon, Monster Tale and more within the first 3 months. Then there was the storm of April 19 that shall forever be engrained in gamer culture for Mortal Kombat and Portal 2. After that it was a desert of absolutley nothing, with the occasional mirage to stop and wonder at. It finally picked back up in September with a nonstop barrage of cool to amazing releases, climaxing at another infamous date: November 15, 2011.

So now that the formulaic intro is out of the way, let's take a look at some random guy from the internet and his mediocre writing as he justifies his top 10.

List items

  • The smartest, dumbest, restrained over-the-top game or maybe even piece of media you'll find. The praise has been sung for this game by the staff, so I'll leave it at that.

    Horrible box art though.

  • Bulletstorm is where all the old school type shooters should go if they wanted to become modern. People Can Fly have crafted one of the most fun shooters in a long time with the outstanding idea of Skillshots and forcing you to constantly slaughter folk with the environment and the leash. I played through the campaing twice AND 3-starred every echo in the game, so I really played the hell out of it.

Not only is the gameplay amazing, but the story and characters go through an amazingly subtle, really good redemption arc as well, despite the "IN YOUR FACE, BITCH!!!" attitude that EA sold it on. Even the ending had a lot of resolution, which is stupidly rare, the problem was they scrapped all that resolution in the post credits tease.

  • Valve made another outstanding game. Shocker, right?

Portal 2 took the bare minimistic gameplay and story of the first game and RAN with it, making the puzzles more elaborate and fun in bigger environs, while somehow still seeming like a small, personal story.

  • I only put this on here because I wanted to vocalize how much fun it is for people who usually don't like fighting games. This is the only fighting game that I've bought for myself after being forced into a couple rounds with a friend. Too bad Capcom had to ruin it with the immediate UMvC3, now I'll never buy another.

    IRON MAN! MAGNETO! ZERO!
