Reflections: A Look back at Pokemon Gold & Silver

Obsession.

One of the words I like to associate with Poke-mania.

Pokemon Gold & Silver were the exact embodiment of that obsession. They essentially created my favorite ever Pokemonexperience .They also introduced a couple of new fantastic additions, and opened up the world of Pokemon like never before.

If you grew up at the time of complete Poke-mania, then Pokemon Gold & Silver were probably a huge deal because of what they offered:

-A new in game clock that actually tracked time and date which in itself affected different events in the game, ie. a specific type of Pokemon appearing at a certain time.

-A 100 new types of Pokemon, new elements, and the introduction of breeding Pokemon for the first time.

-A brand new region full of places to venture through.

Oh, and don't get me started on how awesome it was realizing that there are 8 more badges to get after you beat the Elite Four. Realizing that was one of my favorite moments ever, and visiting the changed Kanto region was a one of kind experience.

I talk about the two games more in today's video, so be sure to check it out:

Was Gold & Silver that special to you as well? If not, what's your favorite Pokemon game?

I would love for them to revisit Ruby/Sapphire and somehow tie it in with another region. I think my top 3 regions are Johto, Kanto, and Hoenn.

What's that? Someone's talking about Pokemon Gold/Silver? BRB, going to go start over a game of Soulsilver on my DS!

Gold/Silver/Heartgold/Soulsilver are my favorite Pokemon games, bar none, and I've played a lot of them.

I actually thought Diamond/Pearl were really weak. Platinum is the only Pokemon game I didn't even complete. Black and White were the best in the series since Gold and Silver for me.

I agree with you too, but the fundamental gameplay changes were significant enough, and exploiting the crap out of being able to bring over as many of your old gen 2 Pokemon as you wanted as clones was also fun, in its own way. Infinite Shiny level 100 Pidgeots named Lucky for me!

The only disappointing part is that Kanto is comparatively sparsely populated and more carelessly laid-out, making it obvious that it was put in the game first and foremost as fanservice. If they'd taken a little more care (and not been limited by the size of Gameboy carts), they could have made two complete games in one. Regardless, no other Pokemon game has been so ambitious or fun to play.

I still like Diamond/Pearl/Platinum for being the first to refine the battle system in a significant way, and I like Black and White for creating a whole new experience by throwing out all the old Pokemon until after you've beat the game.

Aye, I would love to see them do this again. Two worlds in one makes Gold and Silver the best two games of the series for me.

This part blew my *mind*!

And then there's the epic battle with Red.

Pokémon Gold and Silver are extremely strong, but I never finished a Pokémon game after Blue.

I never played Gold, but I played the hell out of Silver. I was sad when I found my Gameboy Color this summer to find that you can't save the game anymore without replacing the battery. I'll have to get SoulSilver for the DS sometime.
