Robert Jiang’s Top 10 Games of 2010

Ah, being 20 years old and a gamer all year long, one seems likely to pick their no.1 as the outlets they visits, though the trend only last for 2 years...Anyway, enjoy the list.

List items

  • I had wanted an interactive Star Wars for a decade by the time Mass Effect 2 came out. My definition of “interactive Star Wars” has changed between my first viewing of Phantom Menace as a 9-year-old and my 20th birthday, and Mass Effect 2 is more of what the 20-year-old wanted. Couple that with the fact that ambitious space operas are few and far between in the game industry, this is not only the game of my 2010, it’s of the 2010s.

  • The game that relived me of my post Modern Warfare 2 blues. Probably the competitive MP I have played most that year. Doing support like giving out ammo, repairing and healing are just as fun as blowing shit up in this game.

  • Get oneself caught up in the hype cycle of a Rockstar game is a double edged sword. But a fun game is a fun game. I personally find it to be more fun to play than any Grand Theft Auto titles before it. The story was impressive (until I watched Wild Bunch in 2017). It’s understandable that lots of outlets consider it as their GOTY.

  • Independently developed titles would take most of the spots on my lists for the recent 5 years and perhaps this was the first I was fully aware of its “indie” status. This monochrome cinematic platformer has more pieces of disturbingly violent imagery than most of the M-rated video games I’ve played. The way it made me uncomfortable also made me think of violence in games in a different way.

  • Like I wrote on my 2009 list, I prefer the Halo games that stand on their own. Bungie’s swan song for the series while does not stand on it own as well as ODST, it still manages to tell the sad tale of Noble team from start to finish. This was also the only Halo game I got knee deep in the MP. Bungie’s Halo certainly went out with a bang.

  • I hardly know you, Matrix. And get the fuck out of here, Max Payne! Because while you two tried to emulate the aesthetics of John Woo’s “bullet ballet”, Platinum managed to capture its essence with Vanquish. While falls into the bin of “space marine shooters” , it was still fresh to play the latest(In terms of the year 2010 , of course) from Shinji Mikami after pouring more than a month into Reach.

  • Vanquish fell a bit short on the contents side. Fortunately, there was Bayonetta. From the team and director behind Devil May Cry, this game is the proper modernization of the game that ether in the 21st century for character action games.

  • While nowhere nearly as impactful as the 2007 original, Bioshock 2 manage to surpass its predecessor in terms of shooting mechanic. Plus, Minerva’s Den, add-on as it is, probably the best Bioshock story.

  • One stealth skill then two to three deadly head shots, power fantasy as a secret agent hardly gets better than that.

  • Want a game to go with LOST’s last season? Remedy’s Microsoft platform exclusive got you covered!
