Great read, Austin. Always happy to see people engaging in these types of discussions without the arrogance and single-mindedness that normally comes along with it ("you're either with us or a racist/misogynist/homophobe/etc." or "you're either with us or a fascist/puritan/SJW/etc."). As with most things in life, the correct answer lies somewhere in the middle of the two extreme viewpoints and the real problem is that people keep walling each other off by censoring viewpoints they don't agree with and assuming the person with the differing opinion is a moron without giving them a chance to speak or argue in good faith.

Well, that and children shouldn't be allowed on the internet... but that's another discussion for another time.

Consider my eyebrow officially raised. I'll take whatever Rock Band you're willing to give me, Harmonix.

Good work, Patrick. Always fun to see John Carpenter's responses to non-Halloween related questions and would double-love to see him contribute meaningfully to a horror-related video game (especially since he actually plays games and seems to understand what makes a good game).

Next year, ask him what the hell was the deal with the fight scene from They Live? That scene is ridiculously wonderful and I would love to hear how much of that was his idea, Piper's idea, stretching for time,

@milkman:

I can only imagine it's the feeling of not having smoked weed but somehow being high anyway.

Assuming EA doesn't completely screw this up (cherry-picking what you can play or how long you can play it), this could be a very interesting way to experience a variety of content.... 4 years from now when there are enough EA games released to justify $30/year.

I ask him on twitter who he plays

Been maining Rose since vanilla after Mike Ross told me she was garbage. Been trying to prove him wrong ever since. Also, Guy, Fuerte.

Dude at least knows the lingo if nothing else. While I don't expect or even want GB to cater to the FGC, it would be nice to have someone in on QLs who has a clue what he's doing and can speak intelligently about fighting game mechanics.If nothing else, it would be a welcome change to Brad's endless DOTA chatter.

I have friends who swear by VIII so to each his own but I though FF8's battle system was awful for most of the reasons already stated.

- Almost no character specialization and the game provides you with even less motivation to do so which makes the already paper-thin characters completely forgettable and interchangeable.

- The junction system which requires you to sit in random encounters and not attack for minutes at a time while you repeat the same inane draw animations over and over again (assuming you want your characters to be powerful enough to enjoy the rest of the game).

- 30-60 second long unskippable summon animations. Unconscionably bad game-design.

- Broken, easily abusable limit break system. This could be seen as a positive if your goal is speed-running.

If I thought the old Squaresoft had a twisted sense of humor I would think the entire game was designed as a critique/troll of how tedious and repetitive traditional jRPGs can be. I could probably tolerate the battle system if I liked the story or found any of the characters interesting or relatable but alas, not the case.
