Steam: now with DLC

No Caption Provided
Steam announced today that they will now be providing DLC for steam games as well as retail and other digital distributions. The Maw will be the first game, but with so many games doing the DLC thing, it wouldn't be surprising to see more announced soon, coughGTAcough.

Demo: Last Remnant

From the second the demo boots up there’s a weird uneasy feeling attached to it, a Japanese RPG on the PC, the continued signs of Japanese expansion. It’s not often you see a demo of any RPG, since it hard to capture what those games really feel like over the long haul, but one from Square on the PC that does back all the way to the VIII days.

The things starts off in windowed mode and an awkward mouse controls, it clearly isn’t like riding a bike. Some tweaking with the 360 controller in hand in the settings tab has max everything and things run smoothly with load times that could use some shortening. Clearly an unreal engine game with lots of loading textures and that distinct unreal engine look. The game runs well and as most unreal games is a looker, the cuts are quite jarring though with weak animations and spotty voice acting.

The awkwardness continues though as the game just sort of places you in a room and some people to talk to, considering this is a first time for a lot of people maybe a better spot to start the demo would have been wise. Fortunately, it doesn’t take too long before you can beat the shit out of some beasts.

The battle system is quite interesting giving you control of two battlements instead of single characters. You then command these battlements with orders that essential equal attack, magic, heal. It was a little daunting at first and I’ve played my share of JRPGs, so I can only imagine how the new comer will feel. For instance, you can flank enemies but how and when seems random to me. Flanking and doing well in the battle moves a bar at the top which determines how you’re doing overall, again what it does though is lost on me. There’s also a button timing mini game sometimes when you attack, it’s a nice little touch keeps you engaged in fighting I find.

No doubt a demo was key for Lost Remnant, being a JRPG on the PC it needs the exposure, but the choice of what you get is a sketchy. The battle system is different, especially for those who have never played a game like this which for the PC market is quite large. Maybe providing the training sequence followed by this would have been a better choice. Nevertheless, the game is fun to play and once you grasp some of the battle system it is fun to kill dudes and that is definitely going to keep this game in my radar, how about you?

Paradise

Burnout Paradise PC

So much fun in such a little time, this burnout demo is fantastic. The entire city is your playground, you only get a couple of events and cars, but just enough to get the feel of the game. The updates seem to be included as well as the different jumps and shortcuts where lit up. The most impressive thing so far is the sound design when you get "wrecked", the smashing of the windshield and the compression of the whole car sounds so perfect. Most likely a pick up for me, hopefully if I can find some friends online it'll be a long term thing for me.
