Irishranger: Best of 2010

  • Easily my favorite franchise of the past few years. Then Ubisoft went and surprised us with a really cool single player story extension in their "multiplayer" adaptation. Good on ya, Ubi.

  • In a year where I had trouble staying focused on games due to family and personal problems, RDR pulled me in and held me in a way that I haven't felt for years.

  • It's only my #3 because I haven't finished it yet. So, cue the screaming fanboys and the arguments about having an opinion on a game without finishing it. I don't care. It's my #3, that's pretty damn good.

  • The sleeper hit of the year IMO. Good story, cool characters, and gameplay that was always fun and never punishing. I'll partially agree that the combat was boring and easy and the ending was a bit...ambiguous, but the rest of the game more than made up for it for me.

  • I love Kratos. I really do. Some say his angst is overdone. I'm not one of those people. I love his angst. It's what makes the games. Oh, that and the beautiful graphics and crazy storylines. Oh, and I love GOW III, too.

  • Batshit crazy and beautiful, good enough reasons to make my Top 10.

  • We can all argue 'till we're blue in the face about how much of a game it is and whether or not it's really just one big QTE. You can't deny that it brought a new way to play and experience games.

  • Creepy and with a story almost too crazy to follow, but very fun to play for all of that. One of the reasons I finally decided to by a 360 this year.

  • If you see any sort of pattern in the rest of my Top 10 games, it's probably that there are few FPSs. What can I say, I like narrative and cool gameplay innovations more than "shooting dudes". Singularity was my one exception this year. It brought some new stuff to the game much like my last favorite FPS, Half Life 2.

  • Completely a personal choice. The last game I played in the series was the original Dragon Warrior twenty years ago. This game brought me back to my childhood, something I needed this year.
