Pretty cool

I think the site is very cool, like the layout and colors, but it seems quite slow for me today. Hopefully the speed will improve, I'm sure this being the first day the site is being hammered.

E3 thoughts

I thought I'd share my thoughts from E3 last week. I watched all the coverage from G4, all 17.5 hours of it, and I've listened to my Gamertag radio, 1UP, Giant Bomb and GFW podcasts about E3. I almost feel like I was there from all the coverage that was available.

My pick of the best game of the show: Fallout 3. I think people have been underestimating this game.  This game looks unbelievably good, I guarantee it's this years Oblivion and Bioshock rolled up into one.

Press Conferences: Microsoft was by far the best from my point of view. Nintendo had nothing compelling to show, and I think Wii Music was an embarrassment. They point-blank said that Wii Music requires no knowledge or skill of music, so what's the point? That's not a game, it's more like a tech demo, not going to be worth $50.

Sony also had nothing to offer that would entice me to buy a PS3. Resistance 2 looks pretty good, but not as good as Gears of War 2.  Little Big Planet does look cool, like a photorealistic puppet show, but not compelling enough for me. The fact that they seem to be pushing user-created content leads me to believe that this is more a tool than a game, and they expect gamers to make their own game.  If I buy a title for $50, I don't expect to have to make the game myself, I want to play their game.  It's like if Unreal Tournament 3 was just Epic saying here's the Unreal editor, now you make the levels.

Microsoft's conference was not perfect, they really should have cut down the time they spent on that stupid "you're in the movie" game. And Lips, what's up with that? If I hook up my iPod and play an obscure song, where are they going to get the lyrics? Or does Microsoft have a massive database of lyrics from every song ever made?  Sort of seems like the same principle that the Phase game for the iPod uses, where it generates data on the fly from analyzing the mp3, but lyrics are not stored in mp3 metadata so I don't know how they can do it.  And will they allow me to use songs that are coming in from my share, or do you have to plug in an iPod or Zune?

Microsoft should never have cancelled Bungie's announcement, what were they thinking? It's ok to go over 5 or 10 minutes especially on the first day when the show floor was not open yet.  Or did Square complain and not want their FF XIII announcement to be overshadowed?

By far the best thing about that Microsoft conference was the FF XIII announcement, it looks amazing and I will definitely be getting it. I love Sci-Fi based RPGs like Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey so FF XIII looks to be up my alley.

Game Programming for Dummies

I'm really into XNA game programming right now. I've always had an interest in programming games, but I could never wrap my mind around how to do it. I remember typing in programs written in Basic from magazines back in the early 80s and playing them on my Vic-20 and later the Apple II.  But I never could understand how games worked, it all seemed like so much magic to me.

Then along came 3D Buzz and their XNA Xtreme 101 course. Their 100+ hour course has finally taught me how to program games from the ground up using XNA and C#. I finally understand how it's done now. If you are interested in game programming, please check it out at http://www.3dbuzz.com . The course is very affordable and worth every penny.
