Star Ocean: The Last Hope had a pretty grating localization team.

I liked how you could skip cutscenes in that game and it would give you a summary of what happened: saved me a lot of ear-bleeding.

It can. The feeling of having interacted in an emotionally impactful story can be very enlightening to some. Just look at visual novels.
