I bought an Xbox "Slim": Ask me anything

Not that you guys don't already know everything about it. But I have one now and it seems pretty awesome. It's very quiet. Slightly less quiet with a disc spinning bu oh man it's soo much improved. The beep sounds on the touch buttons are nice. But oh no! It already has finger prints on it!

Go go bad camera phone pictures!

I payed a whopping $65 after my trade deal with Gamestop. Pretty good stuff considering the only thing I really lost was one controller. The other things I had to trade (the HDD and Wifi adapter) are not only in the new console already, but improved upon. I'm excited.

Imma go play some Ekksbawks!

I have a 360 slim as well.  I was using a launch 360 running NXE on it and everything always took a few seconds to load if not longer (sometimes 20 seconds after coming back from a game or loading up the arcade game listings)  The slim seems to load everything MUCH FASTER.  Loading up my arcade games (about 60 or so) takes only a second, sometimes faster but never more than three seconds.  Everything else browsing around has only been taking me less than a second if the 360 doesn't have to connect to the internet or anything (facebook, netflix, zune, etc.)    If you have an older 360 model, this new 360 is so worth it.   EDIT:  I'll try to post a video later if I can demonstrating load times on browsing the interface. "
I have actually redownloaded the majority of my arcade games, indie games, xbox originals, etc. and I too find that it seems to load faster than before. It could just be the fact that it's a new Xbox and the cache is clear, or something like that. Definitely faster for now though.

I dont get why people go on about the data transfer kit. You can backup anything onto a USB drive, or just re-download it from the account management page.

Does it come with Jeff Bridges? Is there a Daft Punk soundtrack included? Is the original Arcade version in the system?

I thought that when you went to sleep...Bill Gates would secretly sneak out of the Xbox slim..and stare at you while you slept...then walk around the house looking for anyother gaming consoles you own...and then..oh yes..maybe you have a wii and ps3 also? He finds that and gets very angry....and then you wake up the next morning......and you turn on your xbox....and the loading screen stays there..and then all of a sudden...a SUPER CLOSE UP IMAGE OF A VERY ANGRY BILL GATES stares at you.....for hours...and hours...and that my friend...is the new version of the red ring of death :)

As far as I know, yes. It's because the license transfer is for transferring licenses from an old console to a new one. As long as that's happening, you have to transfer licenses. If you are just moving content from HDD to HDD and keeping the same console, there would be no need.  I really don't know for sure though. Pure speculation. To be honest the whole license thing is confusing and a huge pain. "
When you bought your xbox did transfer the info of your harddrive first and than do the license transfer?

Your windows live ID is the email address and password you used to sign up on Xbox Live. Its the info you put in at the top of Xbox.com to sign in.

The most I can get from this deal is like 165 dollars. Thats if I trade in the console with ontroller for 100, the extra controller for 25, and the 120GB HDD for 40.  of course, my edge card would add a bit more to that, but not anything significant.

That means I would still need like 135 dollars for the system out of my pocket, and i dont have that. So, I guess im going to have to pay full price at a later date because in out of work right now.

The deal lasts until July 18th.

I think I've answered th other questions before, but yes I used a USB stick and it was less than ideal. Someone else said that their Gamestop lets them transfer their data with a transfer kit in store, so that's a possibility. I'm of the opinion that anyone upgrading will not be disappointed with the noise level, it's quiet. The side vent gets hot, but that's the main exhaust point, so it's kinda to be expected that it's warm.

@jakob187:
This page and this page explain the transfer thing I'm talking about a little bit. I'm bad at explaining things, hopefully this is more clear.

@JJWeatherman: You should totally be able to download Rock Band DLC without needing that.  One of our customers does it up at my work all the time when he recovers his gamertag to that Xbox.

I've recovered my gamertag to other Xbox consoles and downloaded DLC and arcade games, and they've worked just fine.

So I don't know what to say.  I would assume that it would mainly just be for saved game files, and even then...that can be worked around.  lol

I think that's it. If you have an "edge" card, you get bonus kizzash. I borrowed my friends because I didn't have one. It was kinda hilarious too because my friend's asian. When the cashier ran the card through, he looked at the screen and back at me, then the screen again. I think he thought I stole the card because earlier I asked if he could tell me how much was on it. Funny stuff.

When you download anything on the marketplace, it is assigned a license that is specific to the console you download it on. I think it's also tied to Gamertags, but I'm not exactly sure how it works. Since I have a new console, I have to transfer the licenses over to the new one to be able to use all the old stuff I bought. I think arcade games are actually only tied to Gamertag, so I may be able to download those now, but things like Rock Band DLC, I can't redownload and play without the license transfer.

**Edit:

We'd be trading in our hard drive in order to get this new 360, which could prove problematic in trying to use a transfer kit...

Someone mentioned earlier that Gamestop let them transfer their data in the store as they bought the new 360. You could ask for that.

*EDIT*  I should point out that I am talking about consoles that are not refurbished.  They are completely different, bought at a separate store Xbox 360 consoles.  They do have the same hard drives on them from previous Xbox 360s, though.

The problem is that my brother and I have a LOT of stuff on that hard drive and tied to accounts.  We'd be trading in our hard drive in order to get this new 360, which could prove problematic in trying to use a transfer kit...

@JJWeatherman:  Thanks for your reply. I am considering this deal but as I live in Sweden the slim Xbox is not available for at least a month. Though I did find a similar deal on a Swedish GameStop site. My biggest concern though is the data transfer and of course the price.

Anyway, hope your new Xbox will live a long and prosperous life. Yeah, I know, that sounded weird :-P

ONLY comes with composite (yellow, red, white) cables. Lame, but my HDMI is already ordered and on the way to my house. I didn't see any 120 GB model at my store. They were all in the back room though. "
Wait, it doesn't come with the composite/component (RYW/RGB) dual cords like the original 360s?!  I thought that they said it did on that unboxing video on Giant Bomb...  Also, have you noticed any improved load times for the NXE stuff, like Game Library, Profile, Achievements Screens, Game Marketplace, etc etc.?  The Game Library is my major concern, as I have a LOT of arcade games... No, it doesn't come with the split cords anymore. Just the lame old composite. Microsoft really cheaped out on cables. It can't be that much to throw an HDMI into every box judging by Monoprice.com's prices. If you buy in bulk, you can get 6 foot cables for like $2 each. Microsoft may even be able to get a better deal than that. But whatever.

I haven't actually been able to test the game library loading speeds because I'm waiting for my license transfer to go through before I redownload all my games and stuff. Seems about the same just browsing around the marketplace and whatnot though.

The deal for the system alone is: one 360 system, one controller (of any type i assume), power cables, av cables. So whatever av cables came with it, you will need to trade. You can keep your HDMI.

After that, you can trade various accessories like extra controllers or wireless adapters, or HDDs, etc.

I transfered everything that I couldn't redownload (like game saves) onto a flash drive. Kinda sucks because I have to do another license transfer to the new console. Except I cant do it without calling tech support and complaining because the licenses were recently transfered to my old repaired console and you can only transfer once per year. "

Well that was nice of them. There's a chance I could have done that too, but I didn't want to pay $20 for the transfer kit.  "
I wouldn't either, but I had bought a 120Gb HDD about 1 1/2 years ago, so I did not have to purchase it.

For one of the first times ever, I'm actually extremely satisfied with my GS trade-in; I too got my new Xbox for around $70.

Considering all I had to give up for it was $65 and one controller, it was definitely worth it for me. I had a refurb system that was bound to fail again, so I figured I'd be better off with this new one in terms of reliability. If you don't have an Xbox to trade, or you don't want to trade one, then it depends on individual tastes. It's a nice machine though, I can say that.
