The top 10 games I played in 2014 (All games)

Here's my list of the best games I played this year. It doesn't matter what year it came out, as long as I played it this year.

List items

  • I originally picked up this game because it was free on Origin. However, this game hooked me in from the get go. I really love how this game throws you into the action almost right away and doesn't let up from there. Even though this game takes inspiration from a bunch of different games, I felt there is no game quite like it. No game is quite as tense and fun as Dead space. And its the best game I played this year.

  • Titanfall is one the few games I've ever been truly excited for my life. I'd say it delivered for the most part. Sure, the campaign was disappointing, but I seriously enjoyed the shooting in Titanfall. When you add a pretty awesome parkour system as well as huge titans that basically serve as an extra life, you get a game that I sunk 200+ hours into and was glad I did it.

  • This game was probably my biggest surprise that I played this year. As a person who has never played an arcade-style racing game I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with how this game plays. Being able to drift around corners at high speeds is super satisfying. When you add some pretty great car combat in there as well, you get a game that is one of the best games I've played all year.

  • So, I played the entire Mass Effect trilogy this year, so you can essentially put all three games in this spot. While I'd probably say I don't like Mass Effect as much as most people, I'd also say that this series is pretty great. I was super invested in immersing myself in the world of Mass Effect, which isn't something I usually do. What suprised me is that I actually like the first one the most out of all them. Also, Garrus is a pretty cool guy.

  • I originally expected Crypt of the Necrodancer to be sort of gimmicky. Boy was I sure wrong about that. The thing about moving along to the beat is you never really have enough time to think about what your next move is going to be. This creates a great pace for the game to move along, while also making it quite difficult. This is what makes it an excellent roguelike instead of a mediocre one.

  • I really enjoyed how Shadow of Mordor takes the Assassins Creed framework and tweaks it in a way that makes it way more interesting. Instead of intensely focusing on stealth, they give you more tools to let you play the game you want. Giving Tallion a bow allows you some much needed range to take out your targets with. Add in some great Batman combat instead of the middling AC combat, and you have a game that's a winner on all fronts. Well, except the end...

  • I feel like Velocity 2x is a game made especially for me. From the get go, I fell in love with the pace in which Velocity 2x moves. Everything in that game is centered on going fast, whether you're in a ship or on foot. The game has a great feel to it, so that when you're going fast, amazing things are constantly happening. I also love how all of the levels place an emphasis on replayability. I had a intense impulse to play all the levels again and again in order to master them and get all the perfect medals... Which i eventually did. Mix in an absolutely incredible soundtrack and nice visuals and sound effects, and you've got a great game.

  • Saints row 4 is a really cool superhero game. Even though I didn't like Saints row 3 all that much, I thought they went in a super cool direction for the next one. With super funny dialogue and a fun way to traverse steelport, Saints row 4 is a game I highly recommend. Also, all of the 'romance' option are incredible. Why don't you love me Keith David? Is it something I said? Just give me a chance to get to know me...

  • LA noire's faces still hold up in 2014. Wow. And they're not there for no reason. Combining amazing faces with a cool adventure game-style cop game makes LA noire a really interesting game that I enjoyed playing. Its just a shame I was really bad at it.

  • Fire emblem is just an amazing strategy game. I really liked XCOM, so its no suprise how much I like Fire emblem as well. The thing that really elevates it onto my list is the support conversations. As a person who likes the social links from the persona games, I really enjoyed getting some backstory in what kinds of people the characters in my party were like. All of the support conversations were really funny and well done.
