Best Games of 2011

I am going to give some honorable mentions to a couple games up here.

Duke Nukem Forever - I enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever despite it's performance issues. I decided to support this game not for the game or the character, but for Gearbox, the developer of one of my favorite games, Borderlands.

Terraria - Terraria was on this list for a bit, but I have to be a specific mood to play it, so it got the cut.

Minecraft - Like Terraria I have to be in a specific mood to play and enjoy Minecraft, but seeing as how I've been playing it since November of 2010, I didn't quite feel comfortable including it on this list. And, looking back on my top 10 games from last year, I don't think that at the time I could have put it in my Top 10.

Anyway, keep in mind that I am a college student of limited time and budget, so a lot of AAA games I unfortunately did not get to play. As such, this list is comprised mostly of smaller downloadable games. Enjoy!

List items

  • Bastion is, by far, my Game of the Year for 2011. I am a sucker for a game with a great story, and Bastion's is fantastic. I beat Bastion for the first time, and immediately started a second game...and then a third...and then a fourth. Then, once it came out on Steam (and subsequently went on sale on Steam during this holiday sale) I bought it again, and went through and played in on the PC a bit. I don't buy many games twice, and when I do, I usually am buying it for a friend as well, but I bought Bastion for myself twice...and I would happily buy it a third time (and I might so I can play it through Chrome).

  • You should probably just play Portal 2 if you haven't already.

  • As I am on a budget as a college student, I check out a lot of games of the Indie Arcade for Xbox Live. One of the absolute gems I found was Dead Pixels. Dead Pixels is a great game (with 4-player co-op) and my roommate and I played this game for hours. And at the low-low price point of $1, it's a great game.

  • Cut the Rope came out last year on iOS, but it made its way to Android this year, and so I'm including it in this list. Every time an update is released, I go back through, reinstall the app, and play through the entire game again (just for fun) and ensure that I perfect each box.

  • I had a trio of roommates during the Spring when this game came out, and for an entire weekend, all we did was sit around and play this game. Clash of Heroes was a great game that 4 people can play at once....with only one controller.

  • For one of my favorite games of the year I actually didn't play Magicka very much. But what I did play of it, was great. Combining spell powers to make more powerful and fun spells is awesome...plus the fact that you can just kill everything, makes this game incredibly fun.

  • I HATE old school RPGs. Hell, I hate the majority of RPGs in general, but once in a while, one comes along that is pretty great, and Cthulhu Saves the World, with all of its humor and the fact that it isn't as unrelenting as the other old school RPGs I've played, makes Cthulhu Saves the World a great experience.

  • Orcs Must Die! is a fun game that everyone should play, with its great mix of First Person Shooting and Tower Defense, Orcs Must Die! makes a strong case to be one of the best games of 2011.

  • This is another game I didn't play a whole lot of, but it was absolutely fantastic for what I did. It's a weird and funny game that I plan on playing a lot more of while I am on break from school.

  • I love Monopoly, but man, it takes a long time to play a game. Monopoly for Android makes my list of top 10 games because it is the first video game release of Monopoly I have ever owned...and I get to save my game...that's pretty fantastic.
