According to Shigesato Itoi, the creator of Earthbound (or Mother if you like), there may just be a remake or rerelease the Mother Trilogy. On his Twitter recently he shinted that something is stirring.

"Since it’s now OK to blurt this out, here goes: the “MOTHER republication” thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress."

"It’s not “(MOTHER) 4″, though! This has to do with making “MOTHER” playable. I can’t give out any details just yet, but I do at least need to say that it isn’t 4."

Firstly he has clearly stated that he is not working on Mother 4. In the past, Itoi has often mentioned that he is not doing a Mother 4 (at least not yet), as he says in the video below, though it be a few years old now. He has never stated though that he will never do a remake.

From Itois comment (the first one), I can deduct that Shingesato Itoi is working on something called the "MOTHER Republication." When he refers to the trilogy, he refers to it as Mother (unless they are talking about an individual game in the series, in which he will refer to it by its title eg. Mother 3), so I don't think it's just one game he's talking about, but instead the entire series.

The he refers to "Making MOTHER playable." This line here makes me wonder; if he is refering to a remake of the series, does that mean he is talking about bringing MOTHER to the rest of the world? There was some issue that I'm not entirely aware about that prevented Mother 3 from leaving Japanese shores (apart from the "Official" Fan Translation, which Nintendo has not made an offical comment about yet). However, Earthbound (Mother 2) did make it out in America. In fact many Japanese games make it to the rest of the world.

So, if we are inbound for some form of rerelease, what kind of nature will it be? Will it be coming out on 3DS or Wii U I wonder? It could be a port or an entire remake (or a remake collection with the option of playing the original versions, maybe even finishing off Earthbound 64). With the exception of Super Smash Bros. and the cancelled Earthbound 64, the MOTHER trilogy has never experienced 3D graphics. If they were to make it 3D, I would be much content if they used cell-shaded graphics. Imagine Earthound with graphics like this:

Well all in all, I guess we will just have to wait and see. I'm hoping for a PAL release (we didn't even get Earthbound).
