There are a lot of mechanics here that remind me of early PC platformers.
Collecting items to open up different levels on a world map is a very Commander Keen and Crystal Caves thing. Weapon upgrades remind me of Duke Nukem 1. Enemies dropping food reminds me of Prehistorik. It's crazy how all those little things make their way into platformers as the years go by.
Also, the Doki Doki / SMB 2 thing of being able to jump up on blocks which prevents you from moving forward and needing to avoid jumping to get through was always a pain in the ass.
