I'm still completely baffled by Star Citizen. I could not be more a fan of Wing Commander 2 in the 90s. I have intense nostalgia for it. That speech pack! Dodging for 20 seconds as you tried to lock the torpedoes onto a Ralatha... That storyline, that CG of the launches and landings. The Kilrathi before those costumes ruined them.

Maybe it's aimed at Privateer fans, I guess. I wish they were interested in building a non-generic space setting. A place where I could see space burials on the Concordia, or where tense missions could revolve around a battle between two capital ships, or protecting one as it jumps to hyperspace, or pilots playing poker, or double agents and defectors, or romance, or dealing with prejudice towards your wingman, or any of what gave those old Origin games their character and intrigue.

The one trailer for Star Citizen looks so Mass Effect that it hurts. And now that franchise is sunk, so it's not reflecting so well. I browsed the Star Citizen website and read up about this alien language stretch goal that will be a barrier to operating in that species' territory if you don't learn the actual language. Color me excited about hoping the game will have such a huge following that I can waste time on learning a fake language rather than running a fake EVE spreadsheet.

Guys, I want an off brand X-Wing/Tie Fighter flight sim with some story and creative play mechanics. That's all I want. I even enjoyed Colony Wars for what that's worth. I realize the genre is dead and the only attempts being made at it are in VR. But the war's over, every gaming device and gaming PC now has analog sticks. Lucasarts isn't going to go back to X-Wing. I mean, it's an opportunity for someone, if anyone still understands what those games were like, and that it was fun to actually play them, and that playing it is what makes it a game. I'll put some money down when I see a game like that. It doesn't even have to come on fifteen 3 1/2 inch floppy diskettes to get my respect.

It was a pretty combative year! Hey, that's how it ought to be in a year with so many good, non-formulaic games coming out. Maybe we'll all sing Kumbaya next year about some Switch games?

I would have been disappointed if nobody had brought it with the anti-Zelda sentiments - even though I loved it to the core, I know it has its issues. I actually found a lot of the Zelda NPC dialogue much more JRPG pervy than Nier. And that boss.

Abby & Vinny's Dream Daddy fillibuster is what it is. I haven't played it - maybe now I will? For me that's the point of the awards - game recommendations I wouldn't find on my own.

I loved Hellblade, but I love walking simulators, souls combat, audio logs, in-environment Witness puzzles, etc etc... It hit me at a time when I'd had my fill of Open-World and wanted a guided, systems-light experience.

Happy New Years, and good luck on your backlog, duders.

Square should really steal the train motif for their FF7 promos. We wait all year for the E3 Hype Train, and knowing it's coming is what makes it so good!

They could turn the years of waiting that lie ahead into almost a positive. I mean, if you're a gamer of a certain age like me, RIP Hitman, but I would burn 5 more good franchises to see FF7 come back strong.

It does always seem to be military / action movie style for SNK. Their games are so of that time! And of course, they have the bright Sega-style HUD elements.

I've appreciated Neo Geo from afar, or on trips where we encountered the arcade machines. Except for Samurai Shodown 1 and 2. We would go to the arcade just to play those games for hours. And mostly with the same characters, my buddy playing Gen-An or Earthquake vs my cheap Charlotte. Ah, back then.

On the Switch, I'm so glad it's having a good launch, even though I'll be waiting till Christmas or longer. With every console it's the same for me - I need an exclusive horror game or RPG. That's just how I make the decision.

It does seem a lot like the holding action that people had to go through for the first year of the 3DS. A lot of silver linings in the downloadables, even if they are mostly old ports.

Well, 3DS faithfuls eventually got those ambassador ports nobody else ever would, so who knows.

The sounds in this game are downright Pavlovian for me. Jumping sounds are heavily reminiscent of Quake.

Also, the 'exit plane' effect sounds like the start of the first track from Toxicity.

The thought that the 'that's how we Prey' joke is going to go unnoticed by many...

Do people who never saw the 90s go back and study it?

Ah, now reading the 1-vote items, so good. Misspelled? Shovelware? Came out in 2003? We can only guess!

It's really made me appreciate how much the 30 lives code spoils Contra.

Vinny fighting that boss is some straight up danmaku bullet grazing nonsense. Bravo! It really has been a long time since I saw some let's play stuff and thought, ok, I'm downloading and saving that for the next time I want to grin ear to ear.

I hope he can manage it again next time, during The Run.

That part where Dan says goodbye to himself.

(Or Danny O'Dwyer?)

It reminds me of the many cringes of doing community radio.
