Top Games of 2008

The best of the best games to come out in 2008, at least in my (not so) humble opinion. I'm positive that absolutely no one else would make a list identical to this one.

List items

  • A wonderful and immersive RPG, providing more than 80 hours of entertainment. The game was deep enough to keep me going, and the story and characters were all masterfully handled. Without a doubt, Persona 4 is one of the most well written games ever produced.

  • The brand new direction for the Ace Attorney franchise didn't disappoint. The characters were as lively as ever, and the story was fire better than the first two games, falling just short of Trials and Tribulations. My only real disappointment was how it felt a fair bit easier than the previous games, but that was one of the only real issues I took with it.

  • Although I'm not typically one for annual releases, Out of the Park always tops itself every year, and proves why its the only quality sports game on the market. Once again, Out of the Park 9 instantly became the deepest sports game ever made the second it was put up for download, and the game provided me with hundreds of memories as I tried to balance my team's payroll, stock pile prospects, and build a winning team.

  • An excellent old school RPG that still stood up in 2008, even with Square-Enix removing Party Talk from the English release. The world was lively, the music was evocative, and the combat was fun and well balanced. The joy of exploring the world was amazing, and the game managed to utterly absorb me for several months of my life. Without a doubt one of the most worthwhile DS purchases I have made.

  • Despite some disappointment about certain characters not being in, Brawl improved on its previous incarnations in every way. The Sub Space Emissary mode was a lot of fun, except for one part near the end (*coughGreatMazecough*), and the fighting was quintessentially Smash. While it won't revolutionize game design, it was a very solid game that provided hours of entertainment.

  • Yakuza 2 is everything that I want from a sequel, taking every element of the first game and expanding on it. The systems that made Yakuza so much fun are all back and better, and the story is just as fine as the story for he first game. Like it's predecessor, this is a story that you can't help but being absorbed into, and there's even more to do in Yakuza 2, making it extremely rewarding.

  • The biggest surprise of the year, and one of the best games to come out on a downloadable service yet. The bizarre marriage of Final Fantasy with Sim City managed to work out beautifully, and I found myself losing hours and hours of time to this simple yet complex and addicting simulation game.

  • The Last Remnant is an RPG that is not only original, but also very addicting. The battle system is fast and fun, and offers a very different take on battles compared to the typical micromanagement found in RPGs. Rather than controlling every little move, you'll instead just be giving broader commands, and the battles have a a great pace to them, making sidequests enjoyable to embark on.

While the main character is rather annoying, the story itself is quite interesting, and the world presented in the game is quite fleshed out, giving it a very unique atmosphere. All of these areas combine to make an excellent game.

  • Surprisingly fun and simple, World of Goo provided me with tons of joy and frustration at the same time. The levels in World of Goo were all very enjoyable, and although the game could get very frustrating, it provides a ton of fun, and I have to tip my hats to the folks behind it for creating a wonderful little game.

  • Mario Kart Wii doesn't innovate, but it does provide just as much fun as every previous version of Mario Kart, and it definitely deserves credit for that. The mix of old and new tracks (just like with the DS game) provides a nice atmosphere, and the game play is just quintessentially Mario Kart. It's the perfect game to sit down and play when you're just looking for some good, solid fun.
